Wow I didn't realize it happened that recently! I thought it was a long time ago. I was thinking way back like the titanic! I remember and love Gordon Lightfoot's song, that came out in the 70's, so wow like I said before I didn't know it happened that recently!!!

Yes, it touched all of us here. My former pastor, when he was a young man ,worked on that ship. I read that Gordon Lightfoot donated all the money/ royalties from that song to the families of the seamen who were lost. What a great guy! His song is so hauntingly poignant. I tear up every time that I hear it. I once stuck my foot in Lake Superior while on vacation in Canada and it was ice cold in August! RIP to all of the 29 men lost .:(


Undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau once stated that he preferred sailing the ocean . He said that the Great Lakes waves are short and choppy and more dangerous whereas the ocean waves are more rolling. But of course they can be treacherous too.

I was hiking on Isle Royale with a backpacking club in 1978. After setting up camp by the lakeside we had a "Polar Bear" contest to see who could stay in the water the longest. Most of the contestants didn't last five seconds. I was one of three winners, our leader called it a tie because we were in the water the longest (Still swimming after five minutes! :D

It's such a sad tragedy. The sea and the lakes can be very dangerous yet so many are drawn to them. I've always loved Gordon Lightfoot's song bout it. The part.....does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?....always gets to me.

. In September, 2002 before the second concert of a two-night stand in Orillia, Lightfoot suffered severe stomach pain and was airlifted to McMaster Medical Centre in Hamilton, Ontario. He underwent surgery for a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, and he remained in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Lightfoot endured a six-week coma and a tracheotomy, and he underwent four surgical operations.[29] All of his remaining 2002 concert dates were canceled. More than three months after being taken to the McMaster Medical Center, Lightfoot was released in December to continue his recovery at home.

He is a shadow of his former self. He is still performing and considered Canada's National Treasure.God Bless You Gordon:)

I always loved Gordon Lightfoot! "If you could read my mind love" was his first hit right? I totally love that song , my sister had the 45 and played it all the time!! "Carefree Highway" was good too!!!! And OMG how about "Sundown"? That was an awesome song!!! ;)

Gordon Lightfoot is indeed a Canadaian treasure! I think he's written some of the best lyrics ever and the music he wrote to go with them is pretty good too! His song about the "Edmund Fitzgerald" is just as poignant and stirring today as it was when he first wrote it!
