I could understand why they called it Malcome in the Middle because he was the middle child.

Good question. Here are possibilities that I can think of.

1) Maybe it has something to do with the Frankie character feeling like she's always in the middle of conflict.

2) Some people consider Indiana to be part of Middle America.

3) They're middle class.

I took it to mean that the family is an average family, but slightly dysfunctional. They are considered "the middle" because this is how many families are. Not picture perfect or overly dysfunctional. They are in between these two extremes.

I took it also to mean that they live in the mid west. (as somebody commented above)

I agree with all of these but I think it has to do with the fact that they live "in the middle"

The Middle is set in Indiana, which is in the midwest part of the US.
