Jackie Gleason was abandoned by his own father and seemed to be very bitter about that, so it seems surprising that he would basically turn around and do the same thing with his own daughter, Linda. Family dysfunction doesn't seem to be such unusual thing for a big star; it's a fairly common occurrence, so Jackie is no exception. Maybe the bigger the star, the more self absorbed they tend to be than your average Joe, and family takes a back seat to their career? Anyway, Linda is the mother of actor Jason Patric, Jackie's grandson. And Jason does not seem to have a very positive opinion of his late grandfather, who he said he only saw "a handful of times." Jason was 21 when Jackie Gleason died. It's kind of difficult to understand how a man would only see his own grandson "a handful of times" in 21 years. I saw my grandparents probably a thousand times by the time I was 21. Here are a couple examples of things Jason has said about his grandfather. Any thoughts?

Patric has little love for this comic legend [Jackie Gleason]. "My grandfather was probably one of the most famous men in America and rich, but he didn't approve of his daughter [Jason's mother, Linda] marrying this nobody actor [Jason's father, Jason Miller], so he cut her off, and they lived in utter poverty," he recalls bitterly.

Kevin Gray (interviewer: "What was it like growing up with Jackie Gleason as a grandfather?"

Jason Patric: "I didn’t grow up with him . . . . it was just genetic circumstance. I only saw him a handful of times in my life. He’s had as much effect on me as he’s had on you. He has nothing to do with me or my bloodline; I’m not a thoroughbred or purebred dog or something. Really, it has no bearing whatsoever but really it looks good in Us magazine. He was just more of a hermit."
