CBS would be the last to admit the real truth: That Two and a Half Men was only a great show when the troubled actor Charlie Sheen graced the stage as the show’s star. Although Sheen’s personal life was coming apart like a Greek tragedy, it never meant that Sheen was lacking talent or chemistry. Try as he might, Ashton Kutcher has made an effort to fill Sheen’s shoes. But Kutcher does not have the gifted timing as Sheen nor does he have the all important chemistry with the show’s other star, Jon Cryer. Now CBS had finally decided to pull the plug and Two and a Half Men is now in its final season (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=324670). With the last season premiere finally making it to the airwaves, it’s easy to see that this last year will be a painful year for the actors, crew and the television watching public.
Painful
Many sitcoms take the personal lives of their cast members to use as inspiration for the plot of the show, but CBS has taken it a step further and used its own painful relationship with its own sitcom for the first moments during the season premiere. As Alan (John Cryer) and Angus (Ashton Kutcher) prepare for a night of frivolity during a Halloween double date, Angus suffers serious chest pains, which are indication of a small heart attack. Yes, CBS we have recognized that Two and a Half Men has been on life support for quite a while.
Lack of Imagination
As Angus starts to recover from his attack he looks at his life a little differently. He realizes that only Alan and Berta (Conchata Ferrell) would know if he was gone. So, Angus decides he wants to be a father. What a huge surprise. Ashton Kutcher just had a baby with his girlfriend Mila Kunis and now his character wants a baby. No one saw that coming!
The Elephant in the Room
Although Angus seems to have all the right things in place to adopt a child, especially great wealth. He finds he is wrong when he interviews at an adoption agency. He is told that single men rarely are allowed to adopt and he would have a much better chance if he was married. Is everyone forgetting about the huge elephant in the room? Didn’t this man just have a life threatening heart attack? No, his health issues are never mentioned.
Where is the Originality?
It’s at this moment a surprise visit from Charlie Sheen with a “I faked my own death” story could have come in handy! And just think of the press that would follow such a plot twist. But the predictable storyline was leading exactly where we all knew it would. As Angus lists all the failed relationships he has had with women, he doesn’t know how he is going to find someone that will accept him for who he is (and yes he mentions Mila as his dream girl). There are so many ideas that could have saved this sinking ship, like having Kutcher’s ex-wife (but they are still friends) Demi Moore come on for a few episodes as a consoling nurse. But no, CBS had a better plan.
He What?
Angus finally connects the fact that Alan has always been there for him, and how much better his adoption application would be if they were a couple. So, Angus drops to his knees and proposes to Alan. Yes, we know that gay marriage is a hot thing on television now, but it’s just insulting to have two heterosexual men pretending to be gay in order to fake a marriage. CBS should be prepared for a borage of hate mail from the group of fans they were trying to impress.
