"The Goldbergs" Taking on New Kids on the Block

ABC's "The Goldbergs" is taking on another seminal '80s band.

Six months after showrunner Adam F. Goldberg told The Hollywood Reporter that he was interested in a New Kids on the Block episode, the story has made its way into a script.

THR has learned that the sophomore comedy will take on the boy band behind 'The Right Stuff', 'Step by Step' and albums including 'Hangin' Tough' more with an episode fittingly titled for NKOTB's Jonathan Knight, Jordan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg andDanny Wood: "DannyDonnieJoeyJonJordan."

Steve Basilone and Annie Mebane will pen the episode, with David Katzenberg set to direct.

While an air date has not yet been determined, the episode will see Barry (Troy Gentile) and Adam (Sean Giambrone) discover a box of Erica's (Hayley Orrantia) embarrassing NKOTB memorabilia. Naturally, the brothers take their taunting to an extreme that, as per usual, backfires in epic and hilarious proportions.

The episode will also feature Gentile and Giambrone showing off their '80s dance moves, as one would naturally expect. Production on the episode is currently under way.

"I have a whole episode mapped out in my head about the time that me and Chad Kremp became obsessed with the New Kids. It started out in jest, and we ended up really loving their music. And that's perfect for Adam and Barry," Goldberg told THR in April.

NKOTB has been seeing a renaissance of late. In addition to the group's TVGN reality series "Rock the Boat", the band's 'The Right Stuff' was just featured on MTV's "Faking It", when girl group Fifth Harmony covered the track.

This is one occasion in which the "1980-something" gag for why the timeline is deliberately out of whack creates serious problems when you really think about it. The episode had Adam and Barry finding out that Erica used to be a New Kids on the Block fan. The trouble is that NKOTB didn't really start getting big until 1989, which means for the plot to work it would have to take place in 1992 at least.

You're reading too much into it, the episode was hilarious.

The episode was hysterical... loved how "nerdy" Erica was when she was worshipping New Kids. And loved how Barry and Adam accidentally became fans themselves.

Cute episode but hated New Kids on the Block. Hated the whole boy band thing with a passion. Erica's musical taste seems to be everywhere because in this episode she mentions them, the last episode she loved Tiffany but then she mentioned non teen pop stars.
