what caused it to be cancelled and why was there no uproar to bring it back?

With no internet back in the 60's I guess not even letter writing to the network could've saved it, but from I hear some head honcho at CBS who was a huge fan of the western Gunsmoke when looking at the Fall '67-'68 asked why Gunsmoke wasn't in the lineup and requested that it be put back so out of all of CBS's other shows the axe fell hard on Gilligan's Island which would have been its 4th season.

Actually it was the head honcho's wife who was a Gunsmoke fan. There was only one 30 minute spot available on the CBS schedule and Gunsmoke was a 60 minute show. So one 30 minute show had to be cancelled to make room and GI was chosen to be that show.

It's too bad that they didn't hold it back to mid-season but I guess they didn't do that back then probably because there were less repeats.

that's insane. no other network even thought to pick it up? you'd think GI had like 5+ seasons with the rep it has. I loved it as a kid.
