Awhile back, I traded for a copy of the BBC documentary "Madness in the Fast Lane" profiling the bizarre story of twin sisters Ursula and Sabina Erikkson, Swedish women who were visiting England in 2008.
The two were spotted walking down the central reservation of the M6. Highway Traffic Officers arrived to deal with them, and both women darted into the oncoming traffic, both receiving numerous serious injuries from being hit by fast-moving vehicles. Remarkably, not only did both women survive what seemed like certain fatalities, but both got up mere moments after being hit. (One person believed they were Amazon women, which was the same thought running through my head). The officers attempted to get Sabina to calm down and get her medical treatment, but she shouted obscenities at them and punched one of them, knocking her to the ground. Sabina continued to run into traffic, but was eventually arrested. She was released the next day, however. Ursula received medical treatment.
Later that night, Sabina was out wandering the streets and was taken in by a local man named Glenn Hollinshead. Glenn's friend was visiting him that night, but became afraid and left after Sabina exhibited much bizarre behavior, including her offering them cigarettes, only to snatch them out of their mouths after claiming they contained poison. The next day, Sabina stabbed Glenn repeatedly in an unprovoked attack. Sabina fled to the streets, constantly hitting herself in the head with a hammer and causing herself to bleed extensively, but she survived that too. A local man attempted to help her and she hit him in the head with a roof tile she was carrying with her for whatever reason, but the man wasn't seriously injured. Shortly thereafter, she jumped 40 ft off a bridge onto the road and she survived that too.
Sabina was arrested and charged, but only served a short sentence and was released a few years later. Ursula is also back in public life, having recovered from her injuries. There were 2 different medical diagnoses for Sabina's condition. I'll put them in layman's terms: The first is a known but rare condition amongst 2 people (usually twins) that causes one person to transmit their delusional beliefs onto another. The second is essentially "temporary insanity" in which a normal, sane person can have a brief spell of insanity.
Glenn's brother has criticized the authorities actions, stating that they should have realized Sabina was mentally ill, needed treatment and was a threat to society instead of releasing her out to the public. I would have to agree.
I found everything about the case to be extremely bizarre. How they could survive such extensive injuries is beyond me.
