I just finished watching the first 13 episodes of “Mama’s Family” on DVD. In other words, all of season one. I had never watched this season before. As I’ve mentioned in the past, I was only familiar with the Bubba/Iola seasons and was quite shocked to learn there were a couple seasons before those characters arrived. Besides Thelma “Mama” Harper, Vinton Harper and Naomi Oates/Harper, who appear in all six seasons, the first season includes Vinton’s teenage kids from a previous marriage: Buzz and Sonja. Aunt Fran is Mama’s “baby” sister, who also lives in the house and isn’t happy that Vinton, Naomi, Buzz and Sonja all moved in. Others in the show are recurring characters Ellen (Betty White), Mama’s eldest daughter, Eunice (Carol Burnett), Mama’s crazy daughter and Ed (Harvey Korman), Eunice’s husband. Korman also serves double-duty as he hosts each episode as the character Alistair Quince. Two of the episodes on the DVD were the syndicated versions and thus did not include his opening segment.

I thought the first season was okay. Nothing great and yet you can sense that greatness is coming, or in other words, it shows great promise. Buzz and Sonja are kind of dull and I can see by their performances why they are later written out of the series. I liked Aunt Fran, even though Rue McClanahan, who portrayed her, did not like the character and wasn’t happy being there. I didn’t like that there were about five or so episodes in the 13 episode season, Fran did not appear in. In fact, out of the first 13 episodes only Vicki Lawrence and Ken Berry appear in all of them. There were two flash back episodes, which if the Alistair Quince openings were cut off, you would be confused and think the episodes were shown out of order. But all in all a good season. Speaking of Alistair Quince, I didn't like him. I just wanted to start the show. I didn't like him opening each episode. A couple were funny but most of them (to me) were not.

My favorite episode is probably “Mama Gets a Job” and my least favorite would probably be “Alien Marriage.” But neither of those are absolutely great nor absolutely horrible.

I didn't really like the episode "Alien Marriage" either but it did have some classic lines. Naomi thinking Vint was going to marry a "little E.T." and Mama saying "sitta sitta" to the lady Vint was going to marry.

"Mama Gets a Job" is my favorite episode from season 1 and my 2nd favorite episode of the entire series. I love the scene when the phone rings for the 1st time...pure classic comedy.

Here's my ranking of season 1:
1."Mama Gets a Job"
2."The Wedding Part 2"
3."Fran's Dress"
4."The Wedding Part 1"
5."Family Feud"
6."Positive Thinking"
7."Cellmates"
8."Mama's Silver"
9."For Better or For Worse"
10."Vint and the Kids Move In"
11."Mama's Boyfriend"
12."Alien Marriage"
13."Double Standard"

Here's my top 10 episodes of the series:
1."The Really Loud Family" (season 5)
2."Mama Gets a Job" (season 1)
3."Gift Horse" (season 4)
4."The Wedding Part 2" (season 1)
5."What a Dump" (season 5)
6."Mama on Jeopardy!" (season 4)
7."Mama Sees Red" (season 4)
8."Fran's Dress" (season 1)
9."Supermarket" (season 2)
10."Zirconia's Are a Girl's Best Friend" (season 4)

Adamantium, I can't wait to find out what you think about the rest of the series.

"Mama's Family" is the ultimate for me...my all-time favorite sitcom and my 2nd all-time favorite TV show---"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is #1.

I know this sounds crazy but I've always looked at Mama as a strong positive role model.

I love Season 1. I watched in on NBC from the premiere telecast in January 1983 and it quickly became one of my favorite shows ever. The theater vibe that runs through the NBC episodes gives it a different feel from the syndicated era; and I've always liked the immediate and intimate ambiance that live videotaped sitcoms possess ("Maude", "All in the Family", "Alice", etc.)

I also prefer how Mama comes off more cranky and sometimes out-of-touch with the times in the NBC years (the character becomes more cartoonish and unbelievable as an old lady as the seasons wore on--i.e. shimmying in the front door with her groceries singing "Proud Mary", or doing a striptease while removing her neck brace and body cast, etc. Funny yes, but not very believable.

Also I LOVE how Dorothy Lyman portrayed Naomi as such a strong-willed adversary to Mama in the NBC years. Her ditziness in the character wasn't as entertaining in the later years.

Don't get me wrong, I love ALL the seasons of Mama, but I am one of the fans who prefers the early years. And don't even get me started on the brilliance of Carol as Eunice which the syndies were clearly lacking.
