This was on a 20/20 episode called "What Remains". It concerned the 2001 murder in Seoul, South Korea of Jamie Penich, an exchange student from the United States. Months after the murder, the FBI coerced a confession out of a surprised Kenzi Snider, who was Jamie's friend and a fellow exchange student from America. Jamie's murder had been particularly brutal (she had been stomped to death, with what is described as excessive force.) The FBI alleged that Kenzi got mad after Jamie rebuffed her sexual advances, claims which I find to be absurd and completely speculative. (Jamie was engaged to be married and I can't find any evidence that Kenzi is attracted to women).
The murder occurred one morning after Kenzi and Jamie returned to their seedy motel from the bars. They had visited the entertainment district, which was frequented by U.S. soldiers who were stationed at the nearby base. Kenzi helped a drunk Jamie to her room. Jamie stated she wanted to take a shower, and Kenzi assisted her with this also. That was the last time she saw her alive. The next morning, Jamie's mutilated body was found. Her roommate (who was someone other than Kenzi) did not hear anything despite it being a very cramped South Korean motel room. People in neighboring rooms did hear a scuffle, though.
A footprint was found in the bathroom and it is believed to have come from a man's boot. The motel manager on duty noticed a man coming from Jamie's motel room with blood splatters on his clothing. One witness heard what sounded like a man requesting sexual favors from Jamie.
Despite all this, Kenzi was charged with the murder and was the first U.S. citizen extradited to South Korea. She was acquitted, however. Despite this, Jamie's parents are ADAMANT that Kenzi is involved, and have called for her murder and for her to be put in the harsh South Korean prisons. They also seemed disgusted at Kenzi's alleged sexual advances toward their daughter.
I feel that Kenzi is completely innocent in this and that an unidentified soldier is responsible. There are numerous articles on the net, one of which I posted a link to below. Any thoughts on this case?
