View Full Version : I don't picture an episode like "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" getting made today.

I don't picture sitcoms these days featuring convicted murderers in the plot, and I certainly don't picture them trying to paint the murderer in a sympathetic light.

Just doesn't seem like good material for a sitcom these days.

I just watched this episode and I agree with you. It's weird they made him a murderer....I remember an old George Reeves Superman episode about a guy who had been a convicted thief but served his time and was out living a clean life. The message of that episode was how we shouldn't judge ppl who have served their time and are really trying to set their life straight.

But this TC episode was just kind of...creepy. I realize he served his time and got out on "good behavior," but it doesn't change the fact that he killed his ex-girlfriend in cold blood. I could see if it had been a non-violent crime, but as it was it was way too heavy for such a lighthearted show. And the trio was way too understanding at the end.

Yep and the dude still seemed creepy. Like he was still having to face his demons. He was controlling them but the homicidal tendencies were still there. The actor played a heavy role and did a good acting job. But this is not a role for a freakin' sitcom! Indeed, it's weird how the gang did a total 180 and went from being afraid of him (which I thought was justified) to feeling completely sorry for him.

And why did he have to whisper "the salad had a worm in it"

Did he put the worm in the salad?

I don't recall ever seeing a worm in a salad in all my freakin' years on the planet.

I'm trying to figure out how someone could make a salad and not notice a worm.

I don't think there was a worm....I think it was poison and he just used the worm excuse to not implicate himself.

I mean, really, who carries around an unmarked baggie of "seasoning" just in case there happens to be a salad???? And Jack didn't even bat an eyelash when the guy offered to season his (Jack's) cooking.

Yep, I think you're right.

Boy, turns out this Ray Martin character might have had some depth to him, huh? Still not right for a sitcom, but he's starting to appear to have more layers than many of the main players over the years.

You are so right, the worm excuse was to prevent them from eating it because it was actually poison in the salad LOL

Yeah, he's exactly as bad as everyone thought he was! There was no cute ending that clears up a misunderstanding---the misunderstanding happened at the end, when the understanding turned into the misunderstanding.

Yep, this was the one time it WASN'T a misunderstanding.

I watched again tonight and it's weird that even Ray admitted to the murder. WTF? Very disturbing for a sitcom.

The only way this would have worked in the classic Three's Company misunderstanding mold is if they incorrectly assumed he was a murderer, and they found out he wasn't. But nope, good ol' Ray really is a murderer. Funny stuff, huh?

It was creepy the way they said earlier in the episode that Ray took Terri to a hole in the wall where he could have her all to himself. Definitely he was jealous because he thought something was going on between Jack and Terri. Creepy! All the signs are there that he would have poisoned Terri.
