Man you need to get up on your history. When I first joined this site youtube was in existence. And I know that it was a few years after I joined when we had this discussion. Back in the day when the boards were jumping.

I do admit the "person" is manly looking, but I was looking to see if he/she had an adam's apple so I could be sure. I didn't see one, so that's why I was wondering if you knew for sure. If I saw an adam's apple, there would be no question. But you're right, that alleged girl looks like a dude.

I hate to say this because it defies logic, but I'm starting to think TVFactFan is right.

Looks aside, it's super weird that Michael's kissing buddy, who is called Betty before and after she is seen, isn't credited at the end of the episode or on IMDb.com. There's a Bessie in the credits, but that's Sarina C. Grant (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0335642/) (1948-2005) who talks to Florida in the police station. Sarina also appeared in two earlier episodes of Good Times.

Sometimes actors and actresses go uncredited, but it seems odd to name a character and not have the actor or actress listed in the closing credits. I've seen closing credits that say "Girl in elevator" and generic things like that. IMDb often lists uncredited parts. It's like they used the names Betty and Bessie to cover something up.

Yep, the face definitely looked mannish. I just wish I could get a good look at the neck to see if there was an adam's apple. They seemed to be about the same height. I bet that "person" was wearing flat shoes instead of heels so as not to be taller than Michael.

I guess we'll never know for sure. There's no way you could ask anyone in the cast or crew about this without looking like a weirdo or a bigot.

On a related note about credits, when I was in high school my art teacher told my class that he was the artist that painted the murals and J.J.'s paintings on Good Times. This was in the 90s, when most people weren't online yet and Good Times wasn't in syndication where I lived. I was very impressed and totally believed him for YEARS. After I graduated I forgot about it, but one morning at about 3:00 AM I caught an episode of Good Times and my teacher's name was nowhere to be found. I checked IMDb, nothing there either. I kept thinking, well..maybe. But, then I saw a segment about the paintings on TVLand and I knew for sure my art teacher was full of beans.

I have serious doubts that Michael was kissing a dude.

It's not uncommon for actors / actresses with minor roles to be uncredited.

IMDb will usually include someone who wasn't credited in their listing but only if someone edits the page and names the person playing the role

Although it's a good idea, looking for an Adam's apple might not be enough because not every man has one that is noticeable. Some (like my brother) have one that sticks out like a sore thumb and others (like myself) have one that is hardly noticeable. In fact, during a routine exam my Dr. asked if was born without one and then checked to be sure I had mine.

Of course none of this proves that Solomon is right or wrong but I just can't see someone being hired to play a love-interest for Michael and Ralph Carter or anyone else failing to notice it was a man.

But, what if she wasn't hired? Actors put their family and friends in scenes all the time. I have my doubts too, but I would be less doubtful if we could see more of the face and had a credit.

She (or he) had to have been hired to play the role. Actors & actresses very rarely have anything to do with the hiring of the cast unless they're directly involved with the show such as Andy Griffith and Lucille Ball. As far as I know, none of the actors in Good Times nor any Norman Lear show had any say in who was hired, that was left to the casting director.

Okay, I believe you because I don't know much about it. Have you ever heard of an instance when an actor insisted that someone they knew be cast in a part? I keep thinking that it would have been easier to cast this small part and hide the person's distinguishing features than to hold up the show and bicker with the actor.

I highly doubt the Good Times staff would have allowed Ralph Carter to kiss a dude, considering that the '70s were still very taboo about homosexuality, and Ralph was still a minor. I doubt his parents would have allowed their underaged son to be filmed kissing a dude either on camera. Can you imagine the backlash the Carter family could have gotten back then for that?

That "person" is so mannish. I don't know how anyone could not at least question whether it is a guy. I don't know for sure it's a guy, but I would guess that it is a guy. That's the way it looks to me.

OMG! I cannot believe that we are revisiting this again. As funny as this topic has been though the years, I do believe that it was a girl and not a guy. I don't necessarily need eye surgery....although lazik surgery would not be a bad idea. LOL.

What's next, Sol? Will you then say that some character on Diff'rent Strokes that appeared twice looks like a boy but is really a female and cousin to Arnold's BFF Dudley? Thank goodness you don't know who I'm talking about. *wink* ROTFL.
