Reality Series to Document "Brady Bunch" Star's New 1970s Variety Show (Exclusive)

The man behind "The Brady Bunch's" Greg Brady is bringing his own 1970s musical variety show — and the process will be documented as a reality series.

Barry Williams, who played the eldest Brady son for five seasons on the ABC comedy, will star in Great American Country network's original series "A Very Barry Branson", The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The six-episode half-hour series will focus on Williams as he trades Hollywood for America's heartland — Branson, Missouri — to launch his own '70s-era musical variety show.





The series, which will premiere in early 2015, will follow Williams as he works to create and promote his stage show, gets to know the locals and attempts to make Branson his home. Along the way, he'll take cues from other Branson entertainers, including family band The Haygoods, host former TV co-stars and do anything he can to build an audience.

"Branson represents everything I love about America, including the Ozarks, the people, the beautiful lakes," Williams said. "Performing my '70s Music Celebration show here is icing on the cake."

The 50-song show features Williams performing covers of hits from the Eagles, Elton John, Neil Diamond, John Denver, the Bee Gees and more.





"For me and generations of classic TV fans, Barry represents a time in America when families gathered to watch TV together. In A Very Barry Branson, we’ll capture that same light- hearted, fun-loving tone," said Steven Lerner, senior vp programming and development for Great American Country, HGTV and DIY Network.

I wonder when GAC taped this. Based on Barry's appearance on Celebrity Wife Swap, I thought Branson was already his home and that his stage show was doing well. I will watch this new reality series for sure.

He really needs to get a life. He's been milking this show for 40 years. At least one hit wonders have a song to sing.

Well, this is his life. I saw a show about the behind the scenes of the Brady Bunch show, and it was shown that as a kid, he wanted to be an actor and entertainer and he got his "big break" with the Brady Bunch Show. He was typecasted in the role and this is what he has done ever since. Williams never wanted or desired to be in another profession, he wanted to be a performer, and fortunately or unfortunately the Brady Bunch shows gave him an outlet for that.

The guy who played Peter, the middle son, did the show and then afterwards got an education and then got into some kind of business which he became owner and is now a millionaire. Sure, he did all the subsequent TV shows and specials, but that was extra money for him. Eve Plumb who played Jan was actually a serious actress and this show really did more harm than good for her, and how she tries, cannot distance herself from that. If Mike Tyson went up to her and went "Marsha, Marsha, Marsha!" Eve would beat him to death bare handed. Off the subject.

Is he a good performer? Can't really say. It would be fun to see the guy to say that I met someone I basically grew up with. Would be fun if he did a question and answer session and all that. Never been to Branson, but from what I heard, it is very family friendly, with lots of oldsters performing or attending. Barry Williams would be worth a $10 cover. Maureen McCormack could demand a $100 if she sat on a stool and read The Vagina Monologues.

The guy has been paying the bills and has had a life from when he was 12 to, how old is he now, 60? Not a failure in my book, although some can opine that his career trajectory is cheesy as a Mexican Pizza.

Agree 100%. Every time Barry Williams shows up with some new project, it's generally awful and heavily based on his (long-gone) past. (The only exception I can think of is his very entertaining book.)

I can understand that he's had no shot at premium acting jobs for decades, but I can't imagine that he couldn't get small roles here and there if he really applied himself. For example, Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas) shows up in a small role in The Social Network. And that won Best Picture.

Yeah, they're all 'serious actors' until no one will hire them and then they become 'serious painters' with no talent trying to milk their name recognition some more.
