Jim Boeke, a Cowboys offensive tackle in the mid-1960s charged with an unfortunate offside penalty late in the 1966 NFL Championship loss to Green Bay, died Friday. He suffered from leukemia. He was 76.
Trailing 34-27 at the Cotton Bowl with time running out, the Cowboys had the ball on the Packers’ 1-yard line. On second down, Boeke, the left tackle, was called for the penalty that pushed the ball back to the 6. The Cowboys’ threat to tie the game ended with a fourth-down interception thrown by Don Meredith. The Packers went on to win what we now refer to as Super Bowl I.
Boeke played four seasons for the Cowboys in his nine-season NFL career, which ended after he played for the New Orleans Saints in 1968.
