View Full Version : Evans seemed to eat well for dinner but for some reason they always
TVFactFan 09-23-2014, 11:38 PM ate oatmeal for breakfast?? LOL
Why couldn't they expand their options for breakfast?
1. Cereal
2. Eggs
Was a carton of eggs that expensive? And wouldn't cereal have been much better than oatmeal?
gidgetgrape 09-24-2014, 12:10 AM Cereal would have been better tasting, but more expensive because of the milk. A carton of milk wouldn't last long with 2 adults and 3 kids having cereal each morning.

What about a carton of eggs?
Bonniegirl 09-24-2014, 01:03 AM I love oatmeal!!! It is a warm wholesome food. But maybe if I was poor and had to eat it, I wouldn't like it that much! LOL It is actually a good food to decrease cholesterol . My doctor suggested I eat it. Put some cinnamon , raisins and jazz it up a bit and it's quite good. My hubby puts Quaker oats, a banana and milk in the blender and makes a milkshake in the morning!
My mom used to make it and I liked it as a kid, but other mornings she made the regular, bacon, eggs or French toast, sausage or regular cold cereal . So we didn't have it everyday! LOL!!!
TVFactFan 09-24-2014, 01:11 AM The Evans had some big dinners
baked chicken, turkey, roast so I was wondering why they could not expand a little on the breakfast LOL
visaman666 09-24-2014, 01:38 AM Then one dinner they thought they were eating dog food!

Yes, I will always believe she lied to the evans

I think that eggs are too expensive and time consuming for the Evans to have on a daily basis. If each person has 1 egg (James looks like a 2 egg man to me though- LOL) that's 5 eggs for one meal. That means that a standard carton of 12 eggs would last less than 3 days. Also, since eggs aren't as filling as oatmeal, additional foods (like bacon or grits) would have to be purchased to supplement the meal.
Most people have an egg preference (scrambled, fried, etc) and with getting ready for school and work (with one bathroom), I don't think Florida or Thelma would have had time to fix everyone's eggs the way they liked them. You can put oatmeal in a pot and do other things while it cooks, but you have to watch eggs or they will overcook.
The families on "The Waltons" and "Little House on the Prairie" were broke too, but they had an advantage over the Evans because they lived on farms and didn't have to buy milk and eggs.
I really think oatmeal was chosen though because it gives the kids something to complain and tease Thelma about.

I only eat oatmeal in the winter, but when I do I eat it that way too.

I think that's my favorite episode! I wouldn't have eaten that mess.

Eggs are a pain in the butt to clean up after ! And nobody wants to just eat eggs alone. Have to have some sausage or bacon too. That would require lots of pans that get really greasy! :( Oatmeal would be easier to prepare and to clean up after, ;)

eggs and home fries
robyrob 09-24-2014, 11:08 PM a bulk bag of oatmeal is way cheaper than eggs or potatoes, that's probably why they had enough left over to have a halfway decent dinner occasionally
