Great show but I wouldn't say it was the best ever.

I just think back on all my TV viewing since the 50's and there was no show I enjoyed more. Other top shows of mine WKRP and Leave it to Beaver

I've heard the suggestion that St. Elsewhere (https://web.archive.org/web/20140403161042/http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/3122858-st-elsewhere/?view=getnewpost) was one of those "prestigious", critically acclaimed dramas that won TONS of Emmys but at the end of the day was really just another '80s nighttime soap opera, ala Dallas and Dynasty. Hill Street Blues, Cagney and Lacey, LA Law also fall into this category.

In the 80's medical dramas were becoming popular but when St. Elsewhere debuted in 1982 it became a hit show for NBC and became a blockbuster hit on TV. And with stars such as Denzel Washington Mark Harmon Howie Mandel Ed Begley Jr. and the late Stephen Furst NBC knew that they had a hit on their hands. And with Howie Mandel as the smart Wayne Fiscus St. Elsewhere was actually the show that actually made Howie an even bigger star in comedy and movies and I think Howie Mandel actually made St. Elsewhere a big hit and saved it from cancellation. Mark Harmon on the other hand was the second big star on the show and it's no wonder why St. Elsewhere was Mark's first big break because Mark Harmon became a huge superstar way before NCIS. It's a shame that you don't see medical dramas like St. Elsewhere anymore because St. Elsewhere was one of the most unique medical dramas with a storyline all it's own
