I think one must remember that he was a product of his own environment and a man of his time,growing up in a 1920s Ireland which had been recently partitioned and riddled with insecurities as to whether ties would be broken altogether with mainland Britain. Some say that he fanned the flames of violence and then calmed them down,but faced with one of the world's most sophisticated terrorist organizations the Provisional IRA it is little wonder that views were polarized.
