He was a no-nonsense Protestant preacher and politician at a time when that particular denomination felt threatened by the ambitions of the Irish Republic and feared they would be subsumed into a predominantly Catholic United Ireland. A man of his time,he will best be remembered for heckling the Pope during a speech he gave to the European Parliament in 1988.http://youtu.be/7Fm0QOIw8nQ

Best news since the death of Byron De La Beckwith! Even better than then death of Rev. Fred Phelps!

Good riddance!

I heard years ago he wasn't quite the nicest clergyman in Britain. No Joel Osteen or Robert Schuller, he.

I think one must remember that he was a product of his own environment and a man of his time, growing up in a 1920s Ireland which had been recently partitioned and riddled with insecurities as to whether ties would be broken altogether with mainland Britain. Some say that he fanned the flames of violence and then calmed them down, but faced with one of the world's most sophisticated terrorist organizations the Provisional IRA it is little wonder that views were polarized. It is a huge irony that towards the end of his life he sat down with the terrorists' political wing partly due to a near-death experience he sustained in hospital and partly due to rid himself of his nickname "Doctor No".http://youtu.be/d9uHhLe6WE0
