Michael Che Replacing Cecily Strong on "SNL’s" ‘Weekend Update’
by Nellie Andreeva
September 11, 2014

After a brief stint as a "Daily Show" correspondent, former "Saturday Night Live" writer Michael Che is returning to the NBC late-night show as co-host of “Weekend Update.”

He will join Colin Jost.

Fast-rising New York comedian Che joined "The Daily Show" as a new correspondent in June, after wrapping SNL, which he joined as a full-time writer last September after a guest-writing stint the previous season.

Cecily Strong, who served as co-anchor for two seasons, first with Seth Meyers and then with Jost, will return to being a full-time cast member.

The 40th season of SNL begins September 27 with host Chris Pratt and musical guest Ariana Grande.

Cecily Strong on "SNL’s" ‘Weekend Update’ Change-Up: “I’m Genuinely Happy”
by Anthony D'Alessandro
September 13, 2014

"Saturday Night Live" performer Cecily Strong took to Instagram late Friday, responding to her departure as the “Weekend Update” co-anchor.

It was announced on Sept. 11 that Strong would be replaced by former "Saturday Night Live" writer Michael Che, who will become the first black co-anchor on the faux news segment when the show returns for its 40th season on Sept. 27.

The decision has been met with negative reception, according to social media comments, and Strong insists that "there is nothing to cry about."

“I don’t see this as me leaving, just me being on in a looser, goofier way that is a lot more fun for me and in a way I think I’m better at. And now I get to do features with the very funny and wonderful Michael Che!

No point in being angry or sad for me for something I’m genuinely happy about! Unless you are just a person who enjoys being angry or sad. Then I guess play on, playa.”

In an interview with the New York Times, Lorne Michaels said the change “feels appropriate for now” as SNL enters “a new era.”

“That’s why we did a lot of combinations and tests, and this is kind of where we came out.”

Strong has appeared as the co-host of “Weekend Update” for the last two seasons.

Upon her arrival on SNL, she portrayed the “Weekend Update” guest correspondent ‘The Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With at a Party’.

I wasn't that impressed with Cecily Strong either. She was rather lethargic. But now, the two guys are just not a "team" or a "match". I think it needs to be a male-female combo.

I, for one, dont mind seeing Cecily Strong.

But I think it has to do with the writers. I mean the guys are fine but if the writing isnt that good, than how can Update be any good?
