In the ep where Aunt Kate came to visit Tom says something about how if he (Tom) died Kate would be the only person in the world who cared about Eddie (or something like that). Actually, as we learn in later eps, Tom's mother and Kate's dad (Eddie's grandfather) are both alive and care for Eddie.
