I think All In The Family, The Honeymooners and The Life of Riley are alike, in a sense.

The classic "dumb" husband/father has also been depicted in such prime-time animated series as THE FLINTSTONES and THE SIMPSONS. It's almost a staple of television. To be fair, though, so is the somewhat "scatter-brained" housewife (Lucy Ricardo of I LOVE LUCY, Joan Davis as Joan Stephens on I MARRIED JOAN, etc.). I have to admit that I think the stupid husbands seem to outnumber the wacky housewives (at least on television). I guess the first one of the latter was radio's Gracie Allen (of THE GEORGE BURNS & GRACIE ALLEN SHOW). As you probably know, while William Bendix was the original Riley on radio, Jackie Gleason also played Chester Riley on TV's first version of THE LIFE OF RILEY (but it didn't last long and, when RILEY returned, he was again played by the inimitable William Bendix). |
