I need to watch more Furley episodes before I form a concrete opinion, but it seems to me Stanley and Helen riffing off one another and trading insults would add more to the show than just one guy, as funny and wacky as Don Knotts may be.

But apparently audiences didn't mind so much at the time. I remember as a kid preferring Furley.

In my opinion audiences had no problem with Furley at the time and some might have even thought he was better than The Ropers, but over time opinions change and I don't think Furley has aged as well in the comedic hearts and minds of fans as The Ropers have.

People are starting to appreciate The Ropers more now.

No because Furley was in no position to make fun of Jack for being gay since he was downstairs lonely. Atleast Roper had a women and was more qualified to make fun of Jack

I grew up watching the show since I was a kid so I got used to both the Roper's and Furley.

I liked them both. Mr Roper was really funny in those scenes with Helen.

^^^^ That's true.

Roper was funny when he would put one hand on his hip and use the other hand to "tinker."

When I first got into the show in the 80's, I liked Furley more. He was more over the top and funny to me as a kid. I really didn't get a lot of jabs that Mrs Roper would make to Mr. Roper about sex. As I got older I found that I like the Ropers more. I understood those jabs that Mrs Roper made and I found Mr Roper to be a lot more funny than what I remembered him as a kid. He was a lot more subtle than Furley. Where Furley was more of a zany character, a lot of Mr Roper's humor had to do with how he reacted to things. For me it doesn't get any better than when Mr. Roper and Jack played off of each other.

Exactly. When I was a kid I really didn't get all the sex references. Luckily the show was still funny and it seemed funnier with Furley because he did wacky sight gags like Jack did.

As I said in a previous post, it wasn't until the late 90s and I was an old teenager that I realized just all the sexual humor that was going on, and it wasn't until then I found out Jack had to pretend to be gay to stay there. That's when the more "adult" aspects of the show kick in and that's where The Ropers shine. That's why the more mature one becomes the more one learns to appreciate The Ropers. Furley really is kid's stuff.

Though we can now understand the broad appeal of the show. There was something for the six year olds when watching Jack trip and fall and there's something for older people with the sex jokes.

I agree. I do like Furley. I mean if you have to replace the Ropers I couldn't think of anyone better than Don Knotts. He did a good job with Furley, and it was good that he was different than Mr. Roper. It would have been strange to have him behave in a similar way.
