I don't think TV producers even knew what it meant to give a show a finale pre-mid 80s. I think it's mainly because shows lasted longer then and they didn't have a heads up when they were being canceled (they just assumed it would last another season...every season) so they didn't have time to do a proper send off.

One show "Family Matters" didn't have a true finale, despite Steve and Laura finally planning on getting married. I also think there should've been a spin-off show called "Urkel" where Steve and Laura get married and settle-down.

I got a movie but let down from series

I've never seen a single episode of any of those listed in the initial post. Heck, I've never even HEARD of most of them.

Part of the reason there wasn't a *true* Bewitched finale is because ABC had originally renewed Bewitched for a 9th season, but Montgomery and Asher worked out a last minute deal to get out of that obligation, with Paul Lynde's sitcom...

It seemed to be a thing back in the day that shows never ended with a proper finale and more on a regular episode.

The treatment of Married With Children and The Jeffersons was appalling. 11 seasons and then cancelled, and even then they were not told and had to find out by newspapers.

However despite not being written as a finale, Married with children's finale was filmed and celebrated as the final episode. The crew had a feeling it would be the final episode but for some dumb reason decided not to write the episode as one. The filming of that episode only allowed close friends and relatives of cast and crew in the audience and all the cast did say goodbye, with Katey Sagel admitting she broke down in tears.

It was weird, the only regulars were Oliver and Lisa and they were barely in it. It seemed like a backdoor pilot for a show in his secretary's world, but I don't think that was picked up.

Family Matters- Was supposed to come back for a 10th season, but when the cast cam back, the sets and props were destroyed/gone.

Married With Children- Never really had a true ending to it. The cast said they found out about the show ending from other people and newspapers. The cast said if they could have done a real series finale, they wanted the Bundy's to win the lottery and have a twister come in town, pick up the house and land on Marcy.

The Jeffersons- Wasn't the last episode about their granddaughter in some dance recital?

Laverne And Shirley- The last episode was about Carmine moving to New York City to become a star on Broadway. Shirley was off the show by this time and Laverne was BARELY even seen in this episode.

Living Single- They had a good series finale, but why was Kim Fields not in the last few episodes and how come the series finale took place in December/January because in this episode, they were celebrating New Years.

The Facts Of Life- In my opinion, the series finale stank. Tootie, Jo and Natalie were BARELY shown and it was supposed to be a back door pilot that never got picked up.

Fresh Prince Of Bel Air had a series finale which did well, but there was no perfection in it at all.

The castmembers should never rush out leaving this show when Will didn't finish graduating from college on time.

The mansion rules should help Will graduate from college on time, then get a job, find a new woman, get married, develop a family and return to Philly.

The show completely lost all caucasian fans after the series finale, even if they are rerunning in TBS in the meantime.
