"The Greatest American Hero" May Fly Again, with Pilot Order at Fox
by Matt Webb Mitovich
August 29, 2014

Believe it or not… "The Greatest American Hero" is poised to fight another day.

According to our sister site Deadline, Fox has given a put pilot order (i.e. virtually guaranteed to air) to a remake of the unlikely superhero series, which ran for three seasons on ABC in the early 1980s.

The original series, which starred William Katt, Robert Culp and Connie Sellecca, revolved around a mild-mannered teacher named Ralph who inherits from aliens a suit that affords him superhuman abilities.

Thing is, Ralph loses the instructions for the suit, making for all manner of mayhem and mishaps as he teams with FBI agent Bill Maxwell (Culp) to save the world.

In Fox’s remake, Ralph is now inner-city school teacher Isaac.

The Lego Movie writers-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will shepherd the project, which is being written by Rodney Rothman (22 Jump Street, Late Show with David Letterman).

I'm not a big fan of remakes. But I'm cirious who they are going to cast in this. I think I'll probably just stick with mt DVD's of the original though!

To use the show's acronym and common fan shorthand, GAH!!!!!!!

As I've probably said before, there are few remakes that have been really good, in my opinion. (And I'm talking movie versions of TV shows, TV show versions of movies, new reimagined versions of TV shows, etc.)
Now, to be clear, a spinoff is a different matter. A number of those have been pretty good ("Star Trek: The Next Generation" being one of the best examples.) But some have been pretty bad too.
I don't think anyone else would have the same chemistry as William Katt, Connie Selleca and Robert Culp. I LOVE the classic 1981-1983 series and have seen all the episodes on DVD and I would much rather just keep watching the original classic show "The Greatest American Hero" on DVD.
:)

Believe it or not- you can't beat the original.

Hmm- well, we'll have to see if the Green Guys actually get greenlighted for real when a pilot episode is on the air. ;) (Sorry, but I see a lot of these kinds of stories and it seems like there a number of them that fall apart and never actually happen.) And of course, I pretty much don't really want to see the series revived in any case, as I don't really trust the directors who made a travesty of the "21 Jump Street" series with the horrible and disgusting movies to do a good job with "The Greatest American Hero".
Oh well- I'm content with watching the original classic on DVD. Thanks for the update though.

"The Greatest American Hero" Reboot with Female Lead Gets Pilot Order at ABC
by Nellie Andreeva
January 25, 2018

ABC has given a pilot order to single-camera comedy "The Greatest American Hero", a re-imagining of Steven J. Cannell’s 1981 cult classic with a female twist.

In it, the unlikely superhero at the center — Ralph Hinkley (William Katt) in the original series — is Meera, an Indian-American woman.

"The Greatest American Hero", which had a put pilot commitment, hails from "Fresh Off the Boat" writer-producer Rachna Fruchbom and Nahnatchka Khan’s Fierce Baby.

20th Century Fox TV, where Fierce Baby and Fruchbom are based, co-produces with ABC Studios.

Inspired by the 1980s TV show of the same name, the re-imagining of "The Greatest American Hero" centers around Meera, a 30-year-old woman who loves tequila and karaoke and has spent her life searching and failing to find meaning, much to the chagrin of her traditional Indian-American family.

An inexplicable event occurs that will change the course of Meera’s life forever: she is entrusted with a super suit to protect the planet. Meera may have finally found purpose, but the world has never been in more unreliable hands.

Actors of South Asian descent are all the rage this pilot season (https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2018/03/pilot-season-south-asian-american-actors-india-pakistani-greatest-american-hero-hannah-simone)
New Girl's Hannah Simone starring as The Greatest American Hero on ABC and CBS' Pandas in New York, which revolves around an Indian-American family, are just two of examples of how actors of South Asian descent are landing key roles this pilot season. "Typically, South Asian-American TV characters tend to be terrorists, funny foreigners, or quirky best friends," says Sulagna Misra. "But while several South Asian-American actors have been cast to play sidekicks on this year’s crop of pilots—and even more of them are playing doctors, another stereotype—other roles are breaking the mold."

Hannah Simone tweeted after "The Greatest American Hero" wasn't picked up by ABC:

"We just found out that network TV isn't ready for the first brown female superhero on TV. This would have been history making and so empowering for young girls around the world."

I think she's referring to the TV executives who decide what makes it and what doesn't.

Kind of wish she hadn't jumped right in and assumed racism with no real evidence. Every time a show featuring a minority isn't picked up doesn't mean the networks don't think we're "ready" for a minority lead; maybe the show just wasn't very good...?

The whole world supported "Black Panther" and "Wonder Woman; I'm sure the execs realize this.
