View Full Version : Just read the DVD review and 2 episodes look to be edited on the DVD
TVFactFan 08-26-2014, 01:01 AM 1 episode from season 3(Sweathoggs Back to School special) that comes in at around 24:25
1 episode from season 4 (Barbarino's Blues) that comes in at around 24:10
All the other episodes on the set are 25 or more minutes. So I guess that is not too bad out of a series set but I still would prefer all eps to be at 25

The Back to School Special was basically a clip show so that's no big deal. Probably ran short anyway.
Barbarino's Blues was shorter than the other season 4 episodes from my bootleg set and they were all uncut so maybe it was short originally.

With as many episodes that ran short and needed a minute and a half closing theme, it wouldn't be surprising to see an episode or two just be short.

It means that Barbarino's Blues is probably cut but at least that is only 2 eps out of 95.
TVFactFan 07-29-2023, 07:50 PM just looked at these two on Tubi. So the season 3 episode was CUT and came in at 25:00 on Tubi. Barbarino Blues is also 24:10 on Tubi so looks like only Back to School special was cut
1960'sTVfan 07-30-2023, 01:56 PM "The Fight", "Kotter And Son", and "Meet Your New Teacher, Batteries Not Included", also run under 25 minutes on the DVD's. Run times are about 24:20. Don't know if these are edited or maybe just ran a little short originally.

On Tubi
The Fight is 25:06 but the Kotter and Son and Meet your New teacher looks to have the same version as the DVD

So it appears that The Fight has something edited from it on the DVD. I'm skeptical about Barbarino Blues but if it has the same run time on Tubi and the DVD then maybe it's complete.

I just discovered that the tag scene at the end of The Fight episode is cut from the DVD, but the tag is there when watching the episode on Tubi.

Yes the Tag when Julie hangs up on Gabe when he tried to tell her a joke over the phone

Yep exactly, it's not really a big deal but still no reason for the tag to be cut from the DVD.

That Complete series DVD is going in the trash. Not only did it have glitches in episodes like Arnold vs Carvelli, but it had edited episodes which makes the set TRASH

I'm not throwing mine away although it is disappointing to find out that a few episodes have these sneaky little edits.
I do suspect that the Barbarino Blues episode could be edited, take a took at around the 7 minute mark right after the opening credits, the scene picks up and appears to already be in progress, looks to me like something might have been edited there. The episode run time is only about 24:10 which also makes me suspicious.

yeah you right because the audience is already laughing after the opening credits

Exactly, I've looked at it a few times and it definitely appears like the beginning part of that scene is missing, as you said the audience is already laughing after the opening credits which indicates to me the episode is edited.

And of course if it mentioned before we buy it that its edited they know the DVD would not sell so thats why they keep it a secret

Here's another discovery I just made, the episode Kotter And Son is indeed edited on the DVD. It's only about a 20 second edit but it's still an edit. The full episode is on Tubi, the part that's edited out on the DVD is from the 18:20 mark to 18:40. Take a look at that part of the episode on Tubi and then on the DVD and you'll see what I mean. On Tubi the episode runs 24:35 but on the DVD it's only 24:15.

When I bought the DVD it was right at the start of the pandemic so I didnt care much about what was edited just that every episode would play from beginning to end. And of course it was too episodes that didnt and one was Arnold vs Carvelli. I had to end up buying that episode for $1.99 on Amazon to see the last half of the episode. On the DVD, it freezes while Arnold is in the ring and just shut off.

It's possible that the DVD might be defective. I'll have to watch the episode on my DVD and see if it plays OK.
1960'sTVfan 07-31-2023, 09:22 AM There is a small scene from the Back To School Special that's deleted on the DVD, it's the scene from the end of The Telethon episode where Mr. Woodman sings a few lines from the song My Way, then Mr. Kotter drags Mr. Woodman out of the classroom. The scene is intact on The Telethon episode itself but is cut out on the Back To School Special. Go figure that one out, makes no sense.
How bad is the show hacked up on Antenna?
1960'sTVfan 07-31-2023, 02:56 PM How bad is the show hacked up on Antenna?
I don't watch the show on Antenna so can't say anything with regards to editing.
On the complete series DVD set, I can confirm three episodes that have edits, The Fight, Kotter And Son, and the Back To School Special.
I'm pretty sure that The Barbarino Blues episode is also edited, can't actually say 100 percent sure but I'm like 99 percent certain that it's edited.

On the DVD set do they have the pilot first, or in the third spot as originally aired?

The complete series DVD, season 1 disc 1, starts off with the pilot episode, followed by The Great Debate, followed by Basket Case. This is the way I prefer it actually with the pilot first.

I believe it also runs first in syndication. Common sense seems to have prevailed over that original weird decision by ABC.

I seem to remember that the network people at ABC delayed the pilot for a few weeks because there was concern the viewing audience might react negatively to the "introduction" of the Sweathogs. So two other episodes were aired instead, The Great Debate and Basket Case, before getting around to the pilot.

Antenna TV has the local syndicated versions. Like only showing the opening joke but not the last joke

I agree.
It made no sense to air the pilot as the third episode, especially when you consider that it's literally Kotter being introduced to his classroom, the audience and we're all introduced to the Sweathogs, one by one.
TVFactFan 08-03-2023, 07:05 PM Epstein was a BIT ROUGH for network TV in that pilot episode

I agree. They tried to make him very tough and menacing. By the end of the season, they lightened his character up to where he was like Chico Marx.
