I normally find Becky to be the sane one in the family, but Christ she was annoying in this episode. "Mom, I want to go in the Ultimate". WTF Becky, are you 5 years old?

Let me tell you something, when I was a kid, my parents bought me clothes one time during the year and that was just before the school year started because they were school clothes. They would spend $100 (maybe a little more) and that bought several shirts, several pairs of jeans and shoes. They would not buy you clothes in the middle of the school year (unless it was a gift for Christmas, birthday whatever) and they sure as hell didn't pay $80 for one article of clothing!

Then Becky throws a pouty fit like a little child and embarasses Roseanne in front of the entire store. She guilts Roseanne so much that she caves in the end. What kind of message is that sending to children? That if you whine and cry enough your parents will give in, even at the expense of your father taking back new shoes he spent all day waiting for to buy you some ATROCIUS looking dress you'll wear one time? And Becky couldn't even hand the dress down to Darlene because Darlene would never wear something frilly like that.

And Crystal hits the Blue Light Special and gets rubber sheets FOR FREE because the blue light went on when she was touching them? What kind of sale is that? If that was the case, why doesn't everyone go to the store and touch the most expensive item in there and just wait for the blue light to go on?

I thought Jackie was INSANE. The handsome, buff stud exercising was clearly hitting on her and she opts to turn him down so she can go sulk elsewhere about how crappy her life supposedly is.

I thought some of the stores were ridicilous. House of Chainsaws? You mean there's an entire store of just chainsaws?

Darlene being a money-grubbing little thief, constantly hitting up her parents for money. When I was a kid, if you had money to spend at the mall, it was a special occasion. And she throws out her cherry slurpee because "it was warm". Um no, you go back to the store and have them make you a new one.

And then Dan bothering the busy clerk when he was on his break, and even after he had got the shoes Dan requested. Is Dan not capable of determining himself if the shoe fits? If it fits, then wear it.

It's hard to screw-up a story about a mall, but the writers sure found a way. There are enough stores in there for everyone to have their own adventure without getting into dumb plots like the ones they came up with.

Dude, take a deep breath and keep repeating to yourself, "It's just a TV show, It's just a TV show..."

I've heard that before. I'm not hostile about it, just random observations.

When was this Episode? I've never heard of it. I'm guessing this was one of the early Episodes from the late 80's?

If I remember correctly the dress wasn't so great anyway! Most of the clothes the ladies wore on this show weren't that great! Roseanne was heavy set, so of course it was harder to dress her. But Jackie, Becky, Darleen and even Crystal were normal weight, all had decent figures, and they always pretty much were dressed dumpy! I remember Jackie and Becky a few times wearing cute mini dresses , the type that were fashionable at the time. But the rest of the time they were in baggy tops, and unflattering jeans. And Crystal was always dressed like an old lady!

I can't speak for Becky and Jackie, but Dalene was a tom boy so naturally she isn't going to wear cutezie stuff as Becky and Jackie. IMO, They all dressed according to the type of character they were playing and based on the "blue collar" family. As for the mall story, I enjoyed reading your observations, wiseguy and I so agree with you! I generally skip this episode.

I was always annoyed that Dan took back the shoes he needed to buy an expensive dress for bratty Becky, but I didn't notice the other points you mentioned until just now. Good Post! That mall was way too fancy for a town like Lanford.

Exactly. They were blue collar who lived paycheck to paycheck. Like real families in those situations, they couldn't afford to dress in fashionable clothes or have hair extensions, which I see too often on shows these days, even when the families are supposed to be struggling. That really irks me about shows these days. They look too camera-ready. With Roseanne, you actually felt like you were spying on a real working class family. For example, I liked the fact that Roseanne kept the same purple winter coat for many seasons, and their house didn't look like it was made over by professional interior designers.

But it was typical of Becky to whine to get what she wanted, even if she was too old for that kind of behavior. That is one of the persons why I don't particularly like her, and I can't believe that you missed that it was typical of her to pull a stunt like that.

I totally agree and I couldn't stand Becky at all! It had nothing to do with the actresses who played her, I hated the character with a passion! She was a snot most of the time and got away with it every time! And after the first time of watching this mall episode, I couldn't watch it again for many reasons, but mostly I found it boring.

I actually really like this episode, all in all it's a tv show, it isn't meant to be taken too seriously but yet also has a bit if realism, kids do beg for things and ask and ask and ask until their blue in the face, but also like I said it isn't meant to be taken too seriously, like the crystal part you mentioned, I think that was supposed to be taken exactly how you saw it, going "omg really? what kind of sale is that?" I think was the point of it, and the chainsaw store, also most likely for comedic effect

Regarding the blue light special. I always thought it was funny when they are talking about it Roseanne says, "My luck I'll be touching myself". 😆

Perhaps because Becky is a saint compared to Darlene? Darlene constantly mouthed off to everyone, and yeah, that included her mother. She practically made a career out of it. Becky at least had the capabilities of being polite when she wanted to. And you know what else was great about Becky? She got good grades, didn't get into trouble regularly at school, married a nice man in David (and yeah, I'm going by the finale). All things that can't be said about Darlene. Becky also did her chores and regularly watched after her younger siblings. And how do her parents pay her back for it? By leading her to believe they had a college fund set aside for her (the brightest of the children) and then splurging it on the bike shop (that failed by the way, thank you very much).

Meanwhile, she had to watch as her bratty kid sister fell backwards into being offered a high paying job, getting a college scholarship all the while continuing to make poor decisions in life, not the least of which was the horrible way she treated everyone in her life.

Maybe if Becky whined too much, it was because Dan was focusing what little attention he bothered to give his kids on Darlene. He spent one day with Becky at the mall and acted like it was the hugest inconvenience that could have befallen him.

So yeah, contemplate those items for awhile.

I'm sorry, but Becky was in no way a saint. She made one stupid thing after another, like getting drunk when she was only fourteen, and running off to get married instead of finding a way to go to College without a fund (just like many people have to do in real life). And yes, I found her constant whining extremely annoying. Say what you want about Darlene, and I agree that she often was a smart mouth. But it seemed she was the one with the brain, no matter what the school grades said. She found a way to get an education and stay with her boyfriend at the same time, while the supposedly brighter student Becky almost threw her future away, just because her parents didn't hand her everything on a silver platter. Darlene was a far more interesting person, if you ask me. She had the guts to be different and think outside the box, while Becky was a prissy girly-girl cry-baby.

I don't condone underage drinking, but it's extremely common. She got drunk once, paid for it, and never did it again. When it came to smart-mouthing, Darlene did it all the time and never got in trouble with her parents for it. Becky mouthed off to Roseanne once, when she got real specific about where she was that afternoon (which didn't involved any nefarious activity) and Roseanne grounded her for like 2 weeks.

Becky got good grades in subjects across the board. Darlene had *one* talent, and managed to luck out, get a scholarship and promise of a high-paying job, not to mention have a boyfriend that withstood all of her verbal abuse. She did little to deserve any of that.

Becky also didn't taunt Dj the way Darlene did. Yeah, she had her moments, but she was by far the more disciplined and smarter of the two and got treated crappily in return, while Darlene never did anything except be a smart mouth and had many things handed to her on a silver platter.

Darlene committed one of the most atrocious acts ever by sabotaging the Lunch Box. It's what helped put clothes on her back and a roof over her head.

Yeah, many people do have to pay for college on their own. I was one of them. But Dan and Roseanne could have at least had the decency to not let Becky believe there was some huge college fund for her.

Okay, I'm not saying that Darlene was some perfect saint either. And I'm sure that she too made her mistakes (even though I must have missed the episode, where she had sabotaged the Lunch Box). But in the end, I still prefer her over Becky.

I tend to agree with you on this one. I never quite "got" why Darlene was downright rude and catty towards Molly Tilden when she moved in next door. This was before she tried flirting with David from memory. Was Darlene that insecure that David would stray from her?

On the topic of the Motorbike Shop - Ziggy was a straight out loser who hadn't grown up. He was still stuck in 1968 somewhere instead of acting like a responsible adult. Funnily enough there's actually people like this out there in real life! lol.
