I think John Ritter himself felt that it was pretty out of character for a guy like Jack Tripper to turn down the advances of a hot (albeit older) woman. Therefore, it isn't too surprising that Lana (Ann Wedgeworth) was gone after one season. Was Lana supposed to fill in Mrs. Roper (who had left to do her own series) as the token or resident "older female character" (since Mr. Furley was replacing Mr. Roper as the landlord/"older male character").

I guess that was her role. Really doesn't make sense does it? And Ann wasn't old.... Only 45 at the time.
45 isn't old.
But yeah, there really wasn't a need for Lana on the show.

Yeah, Lana didn't make much sense. We saw on "The Older Woman" where Jack falls for a pretty perfect match who happens to be at least ten years older than him. She was one of the only women he scored with who didn't dump him or end up humiliating him. The only reason she left was because she was just visiting Santa Monica. So there was no reason Jack should have resisted Lana.
I think Jack was suited to an older woman, lol. She appreciated his energy and he appreciated her sophistication.
