View Full Version : Is the Entire World Under the Assumption That Everyone is on Facebook?

I have a FB account but rarely use it. I don't care much for social media but was pressured into signing up and regrettably I did. My main reason for asking this question is that a friend passed away in his sleep last night and I found out about it a couple of hours ago on another message board and of course the person who posted the news found out through FB. When I went there to see for myself it had been all over FB for several hours. What I don't get is why didn't anyone bother to call and tell me or has picking up the phone and calling someone become a thing of the past now?

I never use Facebook. I signed up once because it was the only way I could vote online for the next "Food Network Star." That was the only reason I signed up and I never used it for anything else. Honestly, I don't really understand Facebook and I don't want to. I don't care about it at all. If I want to communicate with someone, I'll talk to them on the telephone.

BTW, Zoneboy, sorry about your friend's passing.

If you don't want to tell me don't. Who did you vote for Next Food Network Star? I voted for Nicole most of the way. She got to the final three.

Last year, I wanted Stacey Poon-Kinney to win, but Damaris Phillips won. This year I also wanted Nicole.
A few years ago, I wanted Jeff Mauro to win and he did.

I'm so sorry Charles. I don't go on Facebook everyday. Sometimes I go weeks without being on so I do get where you're coming from.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Zoneboy. :( Facebook is a huge thing in my generation in my small hometown, but I don't have an account there and I probably never will. I don't do Twitter, Instagram, or any of that either.

I'm 31 years old and I don't have a Facebook, Twitter or Instagram account and I'm proud of it. I frequent several message boards but that's about it.

It's sad what has happened to message boards since Facebook came along. Sitcoms Online used to be busy well into the night but not anymore.

I love Facebook and Twitter. It's good way to be personable with people, when often a phone call doesn't. I'd rather talk to someone on FB or twitter than on the phone.

I hate using the phone unless it's necessary

I'm not a social media type of guy myself and I only opened a Facebook acct back in the day out of curiousity but I'm never on it, nor do I post updates every second, I also have like 14 friend requests that I've never followed up on.

Basically I want people to know that I won't be a slave to Facebook by doing my part in not logging in.

Not trying to be rude, but I doubt many are going to care if someone logs into FB or not....

My Internet use (which began more or less close to the year 2000) has been basically in three cycles: (1) I spent a lot of time (and money) buying collectibles on eBay (beginning in April 2000), (2) after I was laid off from my job (in 2005), I seldom used eBay and discovered Sitcoms Online, and (3) about five years ago, through a friend on SO, I was introduced to Facebook, which is where I spend a HUGE amount of time now, mostly posting pics of my comics and other collectibles (many of which, ironically, I bought on eBay). So, my cyber "life" has more or less come full circle. Incidentally, I've created 18 different Facebook pages, and some of those groups have well over a hundred members! I've made some good friends there, and now I can't imagine my life without it. :)

I have so many far-flung friends and relatives, from different parts of the country and indeed from around the world. Facebook is an easier way to keep in touch with people I would ordinarily not have very much interaction with, because of our busy lives and the distances between us.

Can it be annoying and obtrusive? Yes, at times. I would have to say that before Facebook and Twitter, I spent far more time on this site and other message boards. As it stands now, Sitcoms Online is the only message board that I frequent at all these days. Some of the other similar boards I used to visit have been dying a slow death over the years. I am happy that SO is still going strong, though! :)
