The plus is it's cheaper. The downside is it does not contain the bonus disc.

Family Ties - 'The Complete Series' Gets Re-Released in a New 'Unlimited' Box
Mid-November street date for this 28-DVD collection of all 7 seasons

Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter-Birney), once 1960s radicals, now find themselves in Reagan-Era American trying to raise a traditional suburban family. Son Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) is an ambitious Young Republican and his sister Mallory (Justine Bateman) is a shallow victim of the corporate culture, obsessed with music, clothes, and boys. Their only normal kid is young tomboy Jennifer (Tina Yothers), while the youngest, Andrew (Brian Bonsall) quickly becomes a protégé to Alex and his conservative image. This highly successful comedy series follows this unique American family as their views on politics and life clash to give us humorous family moments. Available for the first time in slim, shelf-friendly packaging with all seven seasons' episodes in a 28-disc collection.
Last November, CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution released Family Ties - The Complete Series on DVD, a 29-disc set in deluxe gift set packaging which included an exclusive bonus disc with new extras on board. CBS/Paramount has taken that limited time release out of print, but are getting ready to replace that version with a new November 11th "unlimited" release of Family Ties - The Complete Series on DVD.

This 28-disc package will more easily fit on shelves (store shelves, as well as that of fans!), and will cost less at $89.98 SRP for all seven seasons, compared to $220.98 SRP for the previous version. However, the downside is in the disc count: the 29th bonus disc was indeed exclusive to the previous package, and won't be made available in this re-release. You'll still get plenty of extras, however, such as Episode Promos, Gag Reels, Public Service Announcements from Michael J. Fox and the Michael J. Fox Foundation, an interview with Fox ("The Best Gig in the World"), and Featurettes such as "The Year of the Beard" and "The Making of Family Ties." Here's the artwork for the new packaging:

It's great that they improved the packaging and are making the complete seires available at a much lower price than before. It's just too bad the people that buy this set won't get the bonus disc! I already own almost all the individual seasons so I will probably just complete my collection with the remaining individual seasons.

This is definitely the one I will be getting. I haven't got any Family Ties DVDs yet and this looks like the cheapest option.

Albeit I never did actually like Family Ties, I think that the slimmed-down complete release (which, from the picture, looks to be more like those of Barney Miller and The Bob Newhart Show) will be a great alternative to the original version that had cardboard sleeves (I'm saying this with an eye towards those who purchased the original release with bonus disc having to deal with not being able to see many of their favorite episodes due to the scratched discs).

What is on the bonus disc that was included in the first Complete Series set?

Got this in the mail yesterday. Had a couple of broken plastic pieces in each case unfortunately. :-\ I'll live though. :)

Very happy to have this set finally though! :)

Just looked at a picture of it from EBay, and to me, it looks much better than the previous "family album" version with each disc in its own space; as such, at least you don't have to worry about scratched discs. I mean, after all, when I purchased Shout!'s Barney Miller release, even that came with some broken plastic pieces, but that was much less important to me than having all the discs packaged in a manner where I didn't have to fumble with them and possibly mar them beyond recognition; I think that's what Paramount was shooting for in this newly packaged FT release, and I think very much that they delivered.

The packaging for this new release looks really cool- I do like that. But I own all the individual season releases for Family Ties already, so there's no real need to get this DVD set. What I would LOVE to see is a separate release of the bonus disc from the complete series set that was released earlier. CBS/Paramount has done similar deals with other series- The two MacGyver TV-movies were initially only released in a complete series DVD set but later on finally got released as a separate DVD. I'm hoping the same will happen for this Family Ties bonus disc eventually. (Mainly because I'd love to have "The Art of Being Nick" pilot and that episode of "Day By Day" on DVD, though the other things would be great to have too.)

Being that this one is divided in two parts, something I'd like to know is, how do you think the seasons will be apportioned? I'm thinking that Nos. 1-4 (the seasons under the Proud N, 1982-86) will be in the first part, and Nos. 5-7 (the last three, under today's Bird) will be in the other part.

Part 1 ends at 'Season 4 - part 1' (last episode: 'How Do You Sleep')... Part 2 starts at 'Season 4 - part 2' (first episode: 'You've Got a Friend')... so Season 4 is split over the two parts of this release...

Thank you for the response! That's what I wanted to know. Something else: why did they split the fourth season over the two parts?

You're welcome... I'm assuming the only reason Season 4 was split over the two parts of this release was so the two separate plastic clipboxes holding the discs for Part 1 and Part 2 of the complete series each had 14 discs in them (for a total of 28 discs), rather than the Part 1 plastic clipbox having 16 discs in it (if Season 4 isn't split in two), and the Part 2 plastic clipbox having 12 discs in it...

An equal number of discs in each part of the release: that is a very plausible reason for splitting the fourth season. I completely understand.

Wow, I was shocked when I looked and saw that the set has been marked down to $44.99 on Amazon.

That is a great price for a 7 season complete series DVD set. I could see paying that for "Family Ties"- such a great series! But as I said- I already have the complete series on DVD, so I don't need it. And even if I didn't have the complete series yet, I'd still rather buy the complete series DVD set that includes the bonus disc. I do hope it gets a separate DVD release, but I won't hold my breath waiting on it.....
