View Full Version : Do You Wear Suntan Lotion When Outdoors?
Retro4Life 08-11-2014, 04:40 PM Simple question...personally, I try to as much as I can because my doctor has informed me I have the type of complexion that is very susceptible to melanoma. But I have also read that really everyone should be applying this when outdoors, even when in a car, or out for just a short while. Yep, the sun is that bad.
I never did as a kid because, basically, nobody did. And now I see people walking around with very leathery, brown skin or worse, bright red skin and it just makes me instantly think they are going to be in trouble.

Janice 08-11-2014, 05:46 PM I call it sunscreen. If I'm going to be at a cookout or something for hours, I'll apply it. I don't go into the sun much. I hate the heat. My husband's ex-wife died from melanoma at the age of 56. When they were married, they lived near the beach. He said she would literally bake in the sun, even applying baby oil. He used to warn her that she was going to die from skin cancer, and he was right, the poor woman.

Yep, I know a lady at work, who, when in her 20s and 30s, would actually apply baby oil when suntanning (in the sun), too. Like the lady you mentioned, she now has melanoma, though she said it's under control. She's in her mid 50's now, and you can see the red splotches on her neck, upper chest and back.
It's really scary to me, so regardless of the crap I get or the inconvenience, I apply it and when I simply can't, I wear long sleeve shirts and hats, etc. I'm not going to risk that happening to me.

In the 60's, 70's & early 80's there were no big warnings about sun exposure and skin cancer. So there is a whole generation of us out there paying for all those hours spent in the sun. We also used to mix baby oil & iodine to make our own suntan oil which could cause a sunburn. 20 or 30 years from now they'll be telling us something else we normally do will have increased our cancer risk. But for now I use sunblock if I'm outside for over 20 minutes.
ponytail 08-13-2014, 06:12 AM I live in AZ where skin cancer is common. I do not wear sunscreen, because I am rarely out in the sun for long periods of time. I used to be out in the sun a lot when I was younger and sometimes I did wear sunscreen but now I can't handle the heat so much like I use to. But getting sun is also good for you, it supplies you with Vitamin D which most people are deficient in.
MrCleveland 08-13-2014, 04:52 PM I don't put lotion on since I tan naturally.
Coffeecup 08-15-2014, 03:50 PM OH I am awful about sunscreen. I would put in on at the beach, one of the few place I did indeed put in on. Then when I kayak so anywhere in the hot sun and on or near the water.
I read recently the sun will age skin the most. Normally I try to sit in the shade as much as possible when outside. I have bottles of the sunscreen that have been in my beach bag for years.
Family Ties Forever! 08-29-2014, 02:06 AM I try to stay indoors as much as possible. I'm extremely sensitive to sunlight. My eyes just can't take it. My family says I always look pale, lol.

Wow. It's a shame that people think they are invincible to things like that.
Over the years my mother has used both baby oil and sunscreen while outside. For years she would go to a tanning salon. She loves the beach. Years ago, my mother went to the beach with her bestfriend. She fell asleep while tanning on the sand. She was very sunburned. I hate to think what would have happened if her bestfriend had not woke her up. She was asleep for a couple of hours. I understand people think it's cool to have a tan, but it's not worth getting skin cancer.
Schmoopie 08-30-2014, 01:15 PM Not nearly as much as I should but yes I do.
Race's Girl 08-31-2014, 09:01 AM No, I don't

Mr. Cleveland, I meant lotion to screen the sun's effects, not something to help you get a tan. I think I should have used the word "sunscreen" instead of "suntan lotion", to be honest. Sorry for the confusion.
Dude111 03-10-2024, 05:33 PM I dont wear that stuff,it acts like a magnifying glass to your skin and can make things much worse!!
All that stuff is garbage........
ThisLittlePiggy 03-11-2024, 01:40 PM I have very sensitive skin and I use almost no skin products, so no, I don't use sunscreen. If I am going to be out in the sun a long time I wear clothes that cover almost all my body and wear a sun hat.
DJM77 03-11-2024, 08:18 PM If the sun's out and I know that I'm going to be outside for more than five minutes, then I definitely try to wear sunscreen. I don't want to get melanoma again.
