Quadriplegic actor Danny Murphy, who appeared in movies like There’s Something About Mary and Kingpin, has died of cancer, his agent Cynthia Kazarian confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. He was 58.

Murphy was a longtime friend of director Peter Farrelly and often appeared in the Farrelly brothers’ movies.

The actor, who became a quadriplegic after a diving accident when he was 19, didn’t get into acting until later in life, when he landed a role in the Farrelly brothers’ second film Kingpin, after he’d teased Peter Farrelly for not having any wheelchair users in his first film Dumb and Dumber, according to a biography on Murphy's website.

Murphy had filmed some scenes for Dumb and Dumber To, blogging recently about that. He’d also appeared in Me, Myself & Irene, Shallow Hal, Stuck On You, Fever Pitch and Hall Pass.

Born on Aug. 20, 1955, Murphy grew up with six sisters and a brother in Boston. He’s long been a disability advocate, particularly working to help performers with disabilities, serving as vice chair of the Screen Actors Guild Performers With Disabilities Committee and co-founding a theater company for performers with disabilities, called Blue Zone Productions.

Murphy died in Florida, where he had moved several years ago, Kazarian confirmed.
