I'm being very serious, so please don't respond to me by saying something along the lines of "Well, that's the only name that he can remember" or something to that extent. If I'm not mistaken, his character's name in the pilot back in 1990 was going to be "Donny".

Joey Lawrence oddly enough, has kind of become sort of a latter generation's equivalent to Tony Danza (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheDanza). It seems like it has become a running gag of sorts that every show (Gimmie a Break, Diff'rent Strokes, Silver Spoons, Blossom, Brotherly Love, and most recently, Melissa & Joey) that he does involves his character happened to having the same name as him.

Well, I didn't have a chance to see it (and it isn't like everybody here saw it either)!

He was named Joey in all of his shows because his Gimme A Break character was so popular that they wanted to continue that success by keeping the Joey name.

Charlie Sheen also does the same thing in every show he is in. He has been in about 5 things and is always called Charlie

And Tony Danza has played a lot of characters named Tony too!!
