I think someone who was actually old enough to see Good Times when it was being filmed in front of live audiences said that there was a scene where Michael begun to walk menacingly towards Keith, as if he were going to kick his ass, but Thelma stopped him. I think they said this scene was cut out in syndications... I also think Bernadette herself said that the producers thought that Thelma needed to handle Keith on her own to show she was a grown mature adult....

The only problem is that Thelma had already run to the room so she could not have stopped Michael.
