She had every right to say no when she wasn't even knowing him that long.

She was right to say no, but you have to remember marriage used to be a lot more common. These days marriage is limited to those who are financially successful but not as much at the time. Poor people used to be married at about the same rates as rich, so hey, if Jack wanted to ask, it wasn't considered as ridiculous of an idea back then as it would be now.

I didn't see the issue of living together as long as they were sharing the expenses.

But you have to remember Jack had an old fashioned way of thinking, that a man and a woman had to be married in order for them to live together.
Even though Jack finally agreed to it he was still living in the caveman days where the man had to take care of expenses. But yeah if you think too much about it the brain starts to hurt.

That show would have lasted 5 years if the dad wasn't on it
