In 2011, Zooey Deschanel debuted in the sitcom New Girl. The show was a smash hit for Fox. Not only was it named one of the best new comedies of the fall season in 2011, but the pilot of New Girl received the highest ratings for Fox since 2001. Things have not been all rosy for New Girl lately. The show has been slumping in the ratings and let’s face it — New Girl, just isn’t that new any longer. So, here are five suggestions for Fox to help bring some fresh ideas to the show and help bring in more loyal fans that first made New Girl a hit.

Return Jess to her Dippy Roots

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) likes her chick flicks, loves to sing at random times and is a girly-girl. That was all clear in the pilot when she couldn’t stop watching Dirty Dancing after her break-up with Spencer. Bring back some of these characteristics that made us all fall in love with Jess. Especially bring back the flashbacks when she was young. Friends used this ploy very smartly to give their characters more growth and it could give us all more reasons to love New Girl.

Create a Love Triangle for Winston & Coach

Just starting in its fourth season, it’s a great time to bring in a sexy woman for a few episodes to drive Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Coach (Damon Wayans, Jr.) crazy. Love triangles are always a great way to stir the pot and add some hot excitement to the story line. They can make situations fraught with hilarity and perhaps this would be a clever way to set-up a long-term relationship for one of the characters.

Showcase Cece’s Comedic Talents

Let’s admit it, Cece (Hannah Simone) is always really funny when she is drunk. Cece has a tense relationship with her mother, and it would be great to bring in a guest star as Cece’s mom to spice-up the plot and give Cece a reason to get hammered. Since she is more vulnerable when she is sauced the rest of the cast can take turns making sure Cece stays out of trouble.

Bring in more Big Name Guest Stars

The first episode of the current season featured Jessica Biel as Jess’ opponent when she tries to hit on the only single guy at a wedding. Fox has the right idea here. It’s exciting to see film stars take a break from the big screen and create an unforgettable character on television. This will also give the cast of New Girl more talent to bounce off of their comic abilities.

A Little Schmidt Goes a Long Way

There is a reason there is a special jar for Schmidt (Max Greenfield) called the “douche bag” jar. Schmidt excels at doing and saying inappropriate things and a little bit of Schmidt, indeed, goes a very long way. We don’t want Schmidt to change, but he needs to be a more peripheral character to help balance out the rest of the cast.
