Is there any explanation or why Gomer got his name? Who came up with the name? Gomer is an Old Testament Biblical name.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gomer_(wife_of_Hosea)

The husband of a cheating woman.

I know that Andy Griffith was well versed in the Bible and I think (maybe not) had a lot of input in his show. Was Gomer a name before Gomer Pyle? I think not because no one in history had that name (Opie is very unique too, but Andy knew an Opie (please tell us further, too lazy to look and partying with Otis Campbell tonight). So I am interested how his name came about.

Another thing about Jim Nabors.....when did he know he had some gold pipes? It seems that he became successful as a comedian and then when he became famous, the singing came later. Dunno.

Thank you.

Everett Greenbaum and Jim Fritzell, writers for The Andy Griffith Show, are credited with creating the character of Gomer Pyle. The character was based on an "incompetent" gas station attendant whom Greenbaum met and named after Gomer Cool (a writer) and Denver Pyle (an actor on The Andy Griffith Show).

Jim was combining his comedy and singing in his nightclub act when Andy saw him. So Jim already had the formula.

They had some great names on the show. Opie, Goober, Gomer, Floyd...
How many Barneys do ya know? Very original thinking.

Opie was also a character from Dennis the Menace and was played by Dub Taylor. Ronny Howard who played Stewart on the show of course later became Opie Taylor
