View Full Version : Why did Janet come to California?
JackJanetChrissy 07-11-2014, 11:41 AM Has anyone ever wondered about this? Jack and Chrissy were from other parts of CA so that's not too much of a stretch. But usually ppl move to LA or California to try to break into the film industry or if they find a job they couldn't find at home. At the beginning of TC Janet is working in a non-managerial (aka cashier or "Sales Associate") position in the flower shop, so what do you think prompted her move from Indiana?
JackJanetChrissy 07-11-2014, 11:42 AM I just remembered Terri was from Massachusetts, so there's another question. Maybe the pay was better in CA as a nurse?
Dianne3 07-11-2014, 05:29 PM Good question. School maybe?
Another good question would be is how Janet and Chrissy met.
janet42 07-11-2014, 06:15 PM I don't know that's a good question. Maybe school. In the episode, "Hearts and Flowers" she did say that she did go to college but didn't finish.

I moved from back East to California when I was in my twenties. My first husband and I went out there , California dreamin' , warm weather! :) His sister had moved out there already, so we had somebody we knew there. Seems Janet was out there by herself, and Jack and Chrissy (later Terry) became like her family! :) Janet was probably thinking like me, getting away from the very cold winters, and Southern California seems like such a cool place to young people!;)
JackJanetChrissy 07-11-2014, 10:35 PM I know, the weather alone is good enough reason to move. It seemed to me like Janet's parents were a lot like Chrissy's, but because they were farther away Janet wasn't that worried about their opinion. I'd like to think there's a dark secret in her past
And don't forget Eleanor! I also wonder how they all met. It seemed like they hadn't been there that long....in A Catered Affair it was mentioned that Chrissy had been at her company for two years---that was Season 3! So maybe Eleanor hadn't been there too long before she moved out.
I get the feeling CA is different nowadays---esp Santa Monica, which today seems like a great place to retire, if you know what I mean. Not the first place young poor ppl starting out in life would think to put down roots. But I'm an Easterner, what do I know!
visaman666 07-12-2014, 12:01 AM The young people who moved to California in the 70's, are now ready to retire, so there's your Circle Of Life for ya!

LOL!!! Yeah. I moved out here in the 80's , and I only have a little over 10 years till I retire !!! :D And I can't WAIT!!!!!
The young people are still coming here though, and it is SO EXPENSIVE now! Rents are high. When I came you could rent an apartment pretty cheap. Also, their were a lot of jobs. Not just acting or the entertainment industry jobs. Now the job market isn't so good! It's tougher for the young people who come here now. Us older folks have either bought a house years ago or are on rent control. ;)
JackJanetChrissy 07-13-2014, 04:07 PM It seems like such a great, fun place to live. Too bad it is expensive now, but I guess that's everywhere.
Where would a contemporary TC be set? Portland? I'm trying to think of a trendy and fun yet smaller town three young people would go to start out these days.

Yes it is a fun place. Can't beat the mild winters and the summers are hot but the humidity is low. (well most of the time, for the last couple of weeks it has been really humid here, worse than I ever felt in all the summers I been here) . The beach and lots of things to do here. But on the flip side, expensive and really heavy traffic. It takes FOREVER to drive even a short distance here. And than there is the crime if you are in LA, and lots of homeless people too, but than every big city has crime and homeless! :(
That is a good question. Where could TC take place now days? I'll have to think about it. Seattle seemed to be really hip in the 90's, early 00's! But now IDK??
