dougiezerts 07-07-2014, 07:23 PM I thought it would be cool to start a list of TV alcoholics! Here's ones that come to mind:
Sam--Recovering alcoholic
Norm--UNrecovering alcoholic!
(both from Cheers, of course!)
Hawkeye
Trapper John
BJ Honeycutt--Drunk doctors!
(All from MASH!)

Dr. Loveless 07-08-2014, 03:34 PM Frank Fontaine as 'Crazy Guggenheim' on The Jackie Gleason Show.
Joe Flaherty as newsman/host Floyd Robertson/Count Floyd on SCTV... recovering alcoholic.
Barney on The Simpsons. *Eeeurrghhhppp!*
Herb Tarlek, WKRP. An episode or two focused on how his sales-related drinking binges were starting to affect his job and life.
Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP can be added to the list, too, but in his case, drinking apparently improved his mental reaction time/motor skills, much to the dismay of the state trooper guesting on his radio show!
Murphy Brown was a recovering alcoholic too. (Murphy Brown)
Maryann Thorpe always seemed to have a drink in hand. (Cybill)
Darrin Stephens would get drunk whenever he would get really upset about Samantha's witchcraft on Bewitched.(Dick York era).
Or whenever Larry Tate would bring a client over to his house to meet Sam.
Even funnier was the drunk character who would show up from time to time played by Dick Wilson who would become better known later in his career as Mr Whipple in the Charmin commercials.
factsoflife 07-08-2014, 08:09 PM Maddie on "Suddenly Susan" was an alcholic, I believe. The character portrayed by Andrea Bendewald.
tvfan25 07-09-2014, 08:10 AM Fun Bobby on Friends
Although I never really saw them drunk, these guys still liked their beer:
Archie Bunker (soon as he got home, he always wanted a beer)
Fred Sanford (always wanted some kind of ripple!)
Al Bundy (even going so far as fighting a two cent beer tax on Election Day!)
comedyfreak 07-09-2014, 01:29 PM Jules and her friends from Cougar Town love their wine.
dougiezerts 07-09-2014, 07:07 PM Dr House and Nurse Betty are both drug addicts!
MrCleveland 07-09-2014, 11:31 PM Tim "The Toolman" Taylor would always greet his men guests for a beer. He would hang-out at Big Mike's Bar with his friends and I'm surprised that Tim NEVER got drunk on the show...if "Home Improvement" was made today, I'm sure Tim would share a beer with his sons Brad and Mark since they're legal drinking age now.
Chief Carl Kaniski from "Gimme a Break" would drink beer while watching sports, at one point with his father (though Chief Carl and Grandpa Stanley didn't see eye-to-eye much)! And a few times after a long day...Chief would go to his liquor cabinet and make himself a mixed drink.
Most of the cast from "That 70's Show" has got drunk at least once! Red with beer or a mixed drink, Eric with beer and mixed drinks, Donna with a Long Island Ice Tea...even drinking too much that it made her barf, and Eric's friends with the usual beer!
tlc38tlc38 07-11-2014, 03:15 PM Karen Walker from Will & Grace was the ultimate!
factsoflife 07-11-2014, 09:27 PM Grace on Grace Under Fire.

biffbronson 07-12-2014, 12:38 PM On the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, Foster Brooks always played out as drunk...!
JamesG 07-12-2014, 02:21 PM The cast of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia".
liane49 07-14-2014, 11:19 AM Frank Fontaine as 'Crazy Guggenheim' on The Jackie Gleason Show.

Yong Fang 07-15-2014, 07:22 PM Canadian show The Trailer Park Boys....
Jim Lahey. The actor who plays Lahey is Jon Dunsworth, who is a great actor and does a great job playing a stumble bum alcoholic drunk guy. His pratfalls are athletic.

Good one! not sure if he was already mentioned, but we should also make mention of Homer Simpson, and to a lesser degree Hank Hill, although I think he was more just somebody who drank on a recreational basis.

Retro4Life 05-05-2015, 09:27 PM Gary Ewing from Dallas and Knots Landing.
Digger Barnes from Dallas.
Wawwie 05-05-2015, 09:38 PM Thelma Harper from Mama's Family was a functioning alcoholic.
andress_jade 05-06-2015, 02:52 PM Martin Crane on Frasier loved his beer. I never really saw him drunk though.
Dan Conner on Roseanne loved his beer as well, and was seen drunk a few times on the show. So was Jackie, she was considered an alcoholic due to the fact that she turned to it every time she was in a crisis in her life.
The Crane boys loved their wine and sherry on Frasier. Niles was only drunk one time on the show during his Halloween party and I never saw Frasier drunk. Daphne was a drinker too, although I only saw her drunk like twice on the show.
Bonniegirl 05-06-2015, 03:43 PM Christine Cagney from Cagney & Lacey had a pretty bad drinking problem
veggie-tari-jenn 05-07-2015, 11:38 PM Andy Sipowitz fron NYPD Blue
Abby Lockhart...E.R.
Nikki Newman Y&R
Edward216 05-08-2015, 12:30 AM Nina Van Horn on Just Shoot Me, played by Wendie Malick. Every episode there was at least one joke (usually more) about her drinking and use of other...drugs.
Ed.
biffbronson 05-10-2015, 11:24 PM Worth a mention: On Chico and the Man, Ed Brown (played by Jack Albertson) kept shot glasses in his cash register drawer, and he filled them often!
Yong Fang 05-10-2015, 11:51 PM Lou Grant drank a lot. Kept a bottle of scotch in the bottom desk drawer and he would break it out from time to time. The episode where he gets promoted upstairs, he gets a fancy office with its own fully stocked bar. Back in the 1970's and before, men were men. Two martini lunch, after work drink, eat a steak as big as one's face, and go to bed (after a nightcap).
