Did you see the retrospective they did on the show? I think it was on Biography. The actor that played Michael (Ralph Carter - who was really creepy on the retrospective) said that basically he was there to quote radical politics that was more acceptable coming from a child than an adult.

It was your typical Norman Lear left wing propaganda interwoven into an entertaining TV show.

I think that was the point. Norman Lear wanted to portray the parents as hard working decent people that were innocent victims of racist white America, but without any animosity. A twelve year old Michael was there to spout the truth as Norman Lear saw it.

Michael's rants often annoyed me. I never found his racial talk funny or enlightening. The way he went on about blacks and whites was not helpful or positive. He should have known that Dr. Martin Luther King never would have ranted the way he did.
