Jennifer Love Hewitt Joins "Criminal Minds" as Series Regular
July 1, 2014
by Natalie Abrams

It didn't take long for "Criminal Minds" to find Jeanne Tripplehorn's replacement. Jennifer Love Hewitt has joined the cast of the CBS procedural as a series regular, the network announced Tuesday.

"The Client List", "Ghost Whisperer" star will play Kate Callahan, an undercover agent whose great work at the FBI has landed her a coveted position with the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

"We're thrilled to introduce a new special agent by adding the very talented Jennifer Love Hewitt to our amazing cast," executive producer Erica Messer said in a statement.

"Many of us on the show have enjoyed working with her over the years and look forward to again. We have exciting storylines planned for her character and the entire BAU team as we head into our 10th season."

Hewitt will make her debut in the Season 10 premiere, airing Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 9/8c on CBS. She steps into the gap left by Tripplehorn, who exited the show in the Season 9 finale after two years on the drama.

She, in turn, was brought in to fill the void left by the departure of longtime cast member Paget Brewster.

Hmmm...interesting casting choice. I like her, but not sure if she's a right fit for the show. I didn't care for Jeanne Tripplehorn's character, either...

First Look: Jennifer Love Hewitt Joins "Criminal Minds"

by Aubry D'Arminio

CBS's "Criminal Minds" gets some new blood this fall when Jennifer Love Hewitt joins the cast in the Oct. 1 premiere as agent Kate Callahan.

"Kate is smart, charming, and wise for her years," says executive producer Erica Messer. "Her background is criminal psychology, and her passion comes from wanting to make the world a safe place. She's had a lot of personal loss that makes her a patriot and a nurturing figure to those in her personal and work families."

Callahan, an eight-year FBI vet, is also an old pal of the BAU team and fits right in — just like Hewitt does on set. "The rapport feels like friends catching up," Messer says. "It feels like she's always been here."

Hewitt says she had a minor freakout (http://www.eonline.com/news/561316/why-jennifer-love-hewitt-was-sweaty-clammy-and-thought-she-was-being-punk-d-on-criminal-minds) when she was offered the role as the newest member of the team, Kate Callahan, on CBS' hit series. Turns out, though, that's she’s worked with the showrunner before, on “Party of Five.”

I'll miss Jeanne Tripplehorn on the show, and her character's down-to-earth likeability (to me at least)... I thought it was a good counterbalance to the unappealing uppity air I thought JJ/A.J. Cook started to project as a profiler... Thank God Matthew Gray Gubler at least is still worth watching on the show...

"She's been acting out a little bit, and we reveal ... it's because Kate is gonna have a baby," says exec producer Erica Messer.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is Leaving "Criminal Minds" After Only One Season
by Shelli Weinstein
May 6, 2015

Jennifer Love Hewitt is leaving "Criminal Minds" after a one-year arc on the CBS drama.

Showrunner Erica Messer confirmed her exit to Entertainment Weekly, following Wednesday night's Season 11 finale, which saw a pregnant Kate Callahan (Hewitt) hand over her resignation after a near-tragedy involving her niece Meg, explaining that she wanted to take time off to focus on her unborn child.

Messer said that Callahan's decision very much mirrored Hewitt's own. The actress wanted time off to focus on her second pregnancy and child, who is due in July.

"There was an opportunity there to write towards the truth," Messer said. "Jennifer wanted to be able to give this second baby everything she gave her first, and that's taking time off to be a full-time mom."

Messer added that the door is "definitely open" for Hewitt to one day return if desired.

The season finale airs tonight at 9/8c on CBS.

i don't think she meshed with the show very well - I don't dislike her as an actress, just not a good fit for the show.

Was it because she's pregnant?

Was it because she's pregnant?
probably more likely because she's a new mother and wants to spend more time with the baby

The real reason Jennifer Love Hewitt left Criminal Minds (https://www.looper.com/172725/the-real-reason-jennifer-love-hewitt-left-criminal-minds/)

Writing real life into fiction

That pregnancy subplot for Kate Callahan wasn't fake. The real reason why Jennifer Love Hewitt left Criminal Minds was because she, like her onscreen character, was expecting. She was indeed pregnant with her second child (a son, Atticus James Hallisay, born in 2015) in real life that year — though it didn't become apparent until well into filming Criminal Minds season 10, even after major drafting of the season finale's script was complete.

Erica Messer, Criminal Minds' showrunner, previously revealed that some rewrite of the finale was necessary to give finality to Kate's presence on the show, but she was glad to do it and wanted "to honor [Hewitt's] wishes to go home and be a mama to her two babies," citing her own experience as a mother working in television. The timing of Hewitt's due date and filming for what would become Criminal Minds season 11 wouldn't allow Hewitt the opportunity to fully concentrate on and enjoy the arrival of her son, so unfortunately, a one-season run for Kate Callahan was the way it had to be.

"It's a bittersweet idea of 'life is full of choices and they define who you are'," Messer said of folding Hewitt's departure into the script. "It's really lovely and real, not only because it was happening off-screen, but because I know those things happen in real life, too."
