NBC has renewed medical drama "The Night Shift" for a second season, TVGuide.com has confirmed.

The summer series starring Freddy Rodriguez premiered in late May to 7.8 million viewers and will conclude its eight-episode Season 1 run on July 12. NBC has ordered 14 episodes for the second season.

"The Night Shift" chronicles a group of third shift hospital workers in San Antonio as they clash with new management and try to balance their personal relationships.

"The Night Shift" Renewed for Season 4 at NBC

NBC has picked up "The Night Shift" for a fourth season.

The medical drama has been a solid summer performer, averaging a 1.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.8 million viewers overall in Live+same day in Season 3, making it the #1 summer drama on the Big 4 networks this year.

“Week after week The Night Shift tells incredibly engaging and emotional stories that draw us into a unique world,” said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke.

NBC does not specify but "The Night Shift" will likely continue as summer fare. The drama started in summer 2014, exceeding expectation and earning a second-season renewal. Its second season, which aired in midseason 2015, was less successful but the show did OK in its return to summer this year with Season 3.

I tune in from time to time for the curvy doctor! The lady that does good deeds but gets into trouble and is usually punished by the hospital management for her humanity. I think now she is demoted to a doctor now with no supervisory authority and is under the intern she trained!
