Lifetime to Air The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story
by Rebecca Iannucci
June 19, 2014

“Extracurricular activities” are about to take on a whoooooole new meaning.

Lifetime will go back to school this fall with The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story, a TV-movie that chronicles the behind-the-scenes antics of NBC’s beloved 1990s sitcom, Buzzfeed reports.

The cast includes:

Dylan Everett (Degrassi: The Next Generation) as Mark-Paul Gosselaar
Sam Kindseth (Shameless) as Dustin Diamond
Julian Works (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) as Mario Lopez
Tiera Skovbye (Supernatural) as Elizabeth Berkley
Taylor Russell McKenzie (Blink) as Lark Voorhies
Newcomer Alyssa Lynch as Tiffani Thiessen

Production of the film was prompted by (yet sourced independent of) Behind the Bell, Diamond’s 2009 tell-all that highlighted the actors’ involvement with sex and drugs during the show’s run.

The Unauthorized Saved by The Bell Story will film in Vancouver and premieres Sept. 1 at 9/8c.

Dustin Diamond’s 2009 “Behind the Bell” memoir, which will be used for the Lifetime “unauthorized” film, makes a lot of wild claims.

Can somebody tell me about the cute girl that's playing Tiffany Amber Theissen in the movie? She got a nice body. How old is she? What's her name? Why is the boy that's playing Zach Morris in the movie shorter than Mark Paul Gosselar who played him? LOL.

It's on right now, pretty cool how they throw in bits of 90's popular songs into the mix, don't know how much of it is accurate but its funny.

Kind of weird how the kid playing Zack has an obvious blond hair dye and brown eyebrows.

I don't really know how much of it was true but it was a fun watch. Makes me wanna go back and watch "SBTB" from the beginning. Too bad "GMMB" isn't available on DVD.

I found it odd that the college years were mentioned at the end of the movie but nothing was said about the new class.

The Lifetime film was a Twitter hit, but the juicy scandalous stuff was rather tame. Instead, the two-hour film was packed with Hollywood industry cliches. PLUS: This was Lifetime’s “Sharknado,” (http://variety.com/2014/tv/reviews/tv-review-the-unauthorized-saved-by-the-bell-story-1201293343/) the film was insanely bizarre, presenting 100 revelations (http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/09/02/100-things-that-apparently-happened-as-told-by-the-unauthorized-saved-by-the-bell-story/) from the film, and the casting director says finding Screech (http://www.thewrap.com/saved-by-the-bell-casting-director-on-returning-for-the-movie-why-finding-a-new-dustin-diamond-was-tough/)/Dustin Diamond proved the biggest challenge.

I saw the movie last night and I liked it. I liked the women who played Lark Voorhies and Tiffany Amber Thiessen. I really liked the girl who played Tiffany's character Kelly Kapowski. She's cute and has a nice body. I had no idea Mark and Lark were dating off the screen. Well from what I saw, it seems Dustin didn't hold any bad grudges against his co-stars but it did seem like he was jealous of Mario and Mark because they got the cute girls after them and Dustin couldn't get any girls LOL. I thought it was funny that the Asian guy who was a extra set up Dustin to get him drinking alcohol and smoking weed so he could get him in trouble with the producer of the show and get him fired because the Asian guy wanted to be a star on the show LOL. I thought it was nice that Mark and Dustin had a conversation about the Asian guy who was trying to get Dustin in trouble because Mark wanted to show Dustin that he cared about him. Dustin's dad was a jerk. I thought it was funny that Mark's mom was Asian because I was expecting her to be white LOL.

"Or is it secretly genius, and we were too tired from our Labor Day barbecues to notice?” wonders Kevin Fallon. "We’ve been left with little recourse, after spending two hours of our lives watching it, but to believe that 'The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell’ is really an avant-garde meta examination of Saved By the Bell. That it is a dramatic deconstruction of the worst elements of the hit ’90s children’s series. That the bad acting, wooden dialogue, elementary plotting, and impotent dramatic tension are actually an artistic wink at those very elements in the original series. Or maybe, just maybe, 'The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell' is just plain atrocious.” PLUS: This was Dustin Diamond’s Crybaby Tour (http://www.avclub.com/review/unauthorized-saved-bell-story-208735) of the ’90s, Lark Voorhies tweets (https://twitter.com/TheLarkVoorhies/statuses/506663585427505153) "I did not watch , and will not watch,” and Mario Lopez (https://twitter.com/MarioLopezExtra/statuses/506663183054942209) used the occasion to promote his new book.

What could I say? I watched it and thought it was bad. It didnt really talk about anything. Anything that I found to be something I wanted to hear more of, it was never explained. Examples. I would have liked to see more of the Zack/Lisa relationship. Also, I would like to have seen the Good Morning Miss Bliss years. I mean we didnt even see Milo, Nikki or Mikey. I would have liked to see more of Tori from the show. With the exception of Kelly asking who that new girl was, that was it.

Also, a pet peeve of mine were how the set was. I mean the set they used for The Max looked nothing like the set they used for the show. Also, whenever they showed them fliming in front of an audience, I dont remember any of that dialogue. Ex. of that would be when Screech dresses up like Abe Lincoln. I dont even remember that as an episode.

I liked the kid who played Zack. He seemed very natural.

Time Out! Lifetime's Saved by the Bell Fizzles in the Ratings

Zack Morris won't be celebrating any time soon. Lifetime's The Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story failed to capture an audience on Labor Day, premiering to just 1.6 million total viewers to the 9 p.m. telecast.

For comparison's sake, that's less than half the audience tuning in to Flowers in the Attic sequel Petals on the Wind that earned 3.4 million in May and Lindsay Lohan's critically panned Liz & Dick, which drew 3.5 million.

Unauthorized skewed young, averaging 1.1 million among the 18-49 and 25-54 demos.

Perhaps most people weren't going to waste time watching a movie which is based on a book that the author has admitted was a lie.

Most of the redone dialogue for "episodes" was made up. Plus, the girls DID NOT "return" for the final graduation episode. That episode was done when the cast all had their 13 episode contract. When the powers that be wanted more episodes, they hired Leanna Creel and did more eps. The girls never returned to set to do a grad ep as it was already done. Plus, if you see the copyright year on the episode, it is roman numeraled "1991". Then the Tori eps were copyrighted 1992. So, you see? Inaccuracy.

The book was not completely a lie, the blame was supposed to be on both the producers and writers of the original class, not on Dustin and not on the other original class cast members.

Appraising too much difficulty in the original class and including Dustin and his Screech role in it at the same time was considered too hurried and precarious.

That's the reason why I insist to quit being a SBTB fan right now. The show that I prefer to be a fan forever instead, is Hang Time. Hang Time is way better than this Original class.

Okay, I have no idea what I just watched. But let’s be honest: My expectations for The Unauthorized Saved By the Bell Story (http://uproxx.com/tv/2014/09/the-best-and-worst-of-lifetimes-tell-all-saved-by-the-bell-movie/) were pretty low to begin with because nothing of quality has even run on Lifetime since it lost its syndication rights of the Golden Girls to the Hallmark Channel.

I also already hated this thing before I even started it because Lifetime is the WORST and requires you to log in via your cable provider before they’ll let you watch anything online, which is asinine. Fox let me watch I Wanna Marry ‘Harry’ NO QUESTIONS ASKED. And because our provider (Cox) was not an option, I had to text a friend in Chicago to get the stuff — know what I mean? Anyway.

The cast is not good. I think part of the problem is that they were all born after the show was over, so how could they make this look authentic? I can’t imagine any of them watched a single episode as research because the acting was as bad and over the top as you can imagine.

And there are definitely missing pieces: For example, someone playing Leah Remini because Stacey Carosi was the bomb-dot-com, and Leanna Creal because Tori Scott will suffocate you with her leather jacket for leaving her out of this story! She got Zack’s class ring and you’re leaving her out of this? PSSH.

We open with the cast in a limo going to some event and they get out to a ****-ton of screaming fans and then Mark-Paul Gosselaar does one of the famous Zack Morris “time outs” until Dustin Diamond proverbially body checks him to the left and basically says, “Step off bitch, this is MY story.” But MPG is not deterred.

The movie, if you can call it that, starts out really slow with auditions, behind-the-scenes arguments with the creators, and the tension between Dustin and his father (this is HIS story, after all).

When we first meet Tiffani-Amber Thiessen and Elizabeth Berkley, they are both there to audition for the role of Kelly Kapowski. My first impression of the actress who plays TAT is that her mole is in entirely the wrong place. Lifetime couldn’t even be bothered to have a fake mole position fact-checker?

Before the first read-through, producer Peter Engel gives a lecture about being professional and keeping personal relationships off the set, as we see MPG and Lark Voorhies holding hands under the table — their connection was portrayed as instant — and Mario Lopez cozying up to both TAT and Elizabeth.

It’s ridiculous how quickly Dustin Diamond portrays himself as the shut-out loner with the disapproving father, a true victim and outsider. But since this unauthorized story stems from his memoir which the other cast members refuse to even acknowledge, it’s unsurprising that he tries to portray himself in a sympathetic light, while everyone else is evil and horny.

There is a scene when everyone is talking in their on-set classroom and everything Diamond says is dismissed by the others. He’s making his story parallel to Screech’s because Screech was a sympathetic character, whereas Diamond turned into a giant ******* who no one wants anything to do with.

The first reviews of the show are terrible — and with the cast upset and reacting to them, Diamond is once again the scapegoat. He tells everyone they shouldn’t care what adults think and MPG responds by reading a scathing review of Diamond’s character Screech and how painful his performance is to watch.

It can’t, however, be as painful as this portrayal of the show’s “unauthorized story,” because this happens about 29 minutes in, which feels like forever. Also, side note: I cannot get on board with this kid they cast as MPG (Dylan Everett).

Whereas MPG was tall and strong, and had presence even in the early seasons when he was skinnier, this kid looks like he would lose a stand-off with a leaf blower.

The movie also jumps around and lacks any cohesion. After Dustin storms off from hearing his bad review, he marches into the office of NBC’s president and asks him to change Screech’s character because he’s sick of being the geek on-screen and off. I believe the Prez, in the nicest way possible, tells him to get bent — because Screech makes people laugh and is not going anywhere.

We then jump to a scene with the girls shopping. Two fans come over and tell them how the show is like watching their life on TV and in the very next scene, the girls are trying to convince the guys they need to do more serious shows that tackle real issues like “drunk driving” and “drug abuse.” Both of those wound up as actual storylines — though I would not call a caffeine pill addiction drug abuse, but let’s not split hairs, shall we — although the drunk driving episode involved TORI, so AGAIN why was Leanna Creal shut out? RUDE!

The guys seem less than enthused about this idea.

A particularly painful moment is when Dustin spies on Mario making out with a hot fan — something that apparently is beyond his reach — and then has a Screech-like fantasy:

Forty minutes in and I’m wondering why I volunteered to watch this. Especially because we’re jumping all over the place. We go from a hint that MPG and LV are attracted to each other to a scene where he tries to give her a birthday present on some roof and Elizabeth bursts in and ruins everything. MPG tells her that he “thinks” Lark and he are dating — which doesn’t sound promising to anyone, as EB helpfully points out. But there’s nothing in between and no explanation of their relationship. To be fair, I guess that’s how teenage relationships go, from zero to rooftopping in 60 seconds?

TAT freaks out about a scene where Zack and Kelly share their first kiss and insists that she and MPG practice. This is awfully reminiscent of the rapping Snow White episode (yes, I am aware that was Spano and not Kapowski but work with me here) and I wonder whether or not a Lifetime exec had his 16-year-old niece write this entire thing for him after watching the series on DVD over the course of one weekend — because quality is lacking, people.

Lark starts throwing shade at TAT during a photo shoot for being too flirty with MPG. I personally refuse to believe that any of the girls had issues with one another because — HELLO that’s my CHILDHOOD you’re trying to ruin — and this is really all Dustin Diamond’s fault for being a jackass. As much as he clearly wants us to consider him the pathetic victim, he has done a piss-poor job of making himself the central focus of this “story” — or as I would like to call it, “heaping pile of WTF.”

Tensions run high between the guys, too. Dustin calls Mario a ***** for doing push-ups on the set. Dennis Haskins astutely points out that if the network doesn’t kill the show, the hormones might.

I’m going to take my own time out here and point out the following:

In a recent interview, MPG refuted any negativity that happened on the set:

“Gosselaar said he’s only read excerpts of Diamond’s book and has no involvement with the Lifetime movie, but he does take issue with what Diamond wrote.

‘It is negative. That I must say. Everything I’ve heard about his book is that it is negative, and I don’t remember those things because my experience on the show was very positive,’ Gosselaar said.”

If everyone else remembers the experience as being positive, maybe the issue lies with Dustin. Just saying.

Dustin reveals his first kiss ever (on- and off-screen) was with the future plastic iguana Tori Spelling, and that female fans he met just wanted him to introduce them to the other two Don Juans.

Then we take four left turns and a roundabout to get to the classic caffeine pill scene, which is so poorly depicted, Tori Spelling’s left boob could have done better.

During the scene, Dustin actually laughs out loud. After being met with evil looks, he says, “it’s not like she’s addicted to heroin” and everyone gets mad. He storms out, kicks over a trash can, and naturally accepts vodka from a random stranger, whom he befriends.

This random stranger — whose name I can’t be bothered to remember — seems to be Dustin’s only friend. He gets Diamond drunk before fan events (for which he was almost fired) and then blackmails him with a video of Diamond high as a kite, telling him he will release it if Dustin doesn’t get him a better guest part on the show. Poor Dustin.

TAT and Elizabeth make the decision to leave the show and move on — hence the need for a filler, AKA Leanna. I guess there were some episodes of the last season already shot, so Kelly and Jessie are there. But then they’re not, with no explanation. The movie ends with the graduation episode of Saved By the Bell, for which the girls come back. Dustin does another “time out” and talks about what everyone has done since. It’s pretty lame.

For people who grew up watching Saved By the Bell, this story was a travesty. Poorly scripted, poorly acted, incomplete. I didn’t even laugh once. Not even ironically. We really don’t see any relationships develop beyond a superficial level. Maybe because Dustin was the outsider we’re led to believe he was.

Or maybe there was something else there, but this “unauthorized story” didn’t even tell an actual story, and that’s the biggest disappointment of all.

Its was not Dustin's fault and it was also not the rest of the original class cast members' faults either.

It was the faults of both original class producers' and writers' for both appraising too much difficulty in the original class and including both Dustin and his Screech role in it at the same time.

That was considered too hurried and precarious and the mental disabled fans of the original class are continuing to abhor it too infinitely.

There were mental disabled fans of both the original and new classes and they were more strongly considered fans of both dustin and that Screech role.

I agree with both Dustin and the mental disabled fans that the original class should never act nor appraise difficulty at all.

First of all, that ghostwriter might be that prostitute who automatically lured him in the evil side after the New Class series ended.

Second of all, that prostitute may have controlled Dustin's mind in a wicked way to create revenge and payback on the other original class cast members by writing that lying book.

I don't care about Dustin's age at all, but the blaming still continues on both the producers and writers of the original class, not the original class cast members.

Both the original class producers and writers appraised too much difficulty in the original class along way and at the same time include both Dustin and his Screech role in a hurry.

If you think if it is got to do with money, then there could be a case that there was a big bad recession back in 1989-1993.

Even if Dustin was wrong for writing this book, that does not mean it was his fault. That ghostwriter who fabricated Dustin was some kind of a real female prostitute, who lured him one second after the new class series ended too quick.

Upon watching the "Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story" film, I didn't know that most of the critical reviews for Saved by the Bell were negative. Being a success with viewers, I'd have to imagine the series' critical reviews would have to be mixed at best.

The critics that gave this movie negative criticism are more likely strict Americans. But these strict American critics, continuing to win, may no longer win ASAP.

Hold your laugh for now, Isiah. Of course it was made in Vancouver, which is most likely in Canada than in America.

Even if the American critics gave negative criticism on this movie, that does not mean the American critics will escape from the whole world because the whole world still does not like the original class series at all.

You think my rambling doesn't make sense, mets82? Then go ahead and make my day, sometime in the future you will find out that you made your whole brain get rambled by yourself instead!

What do you think, mets82? You think I'm rambling again? Not quite yet... If you want to defeat me that way, then go ahead an do it and I don't care if you insist. But you'll never know what's going to happen afterwards...

Right now, we know the original class series is considered American-made and you and the original class think Screech is considered too difficult to get along. Unfortunately, the original class was getting too difficult on Screech, on the other hand, and the whole world isn't satisfied about the way original class was getting too difficult on Screech at all.

Screech is an autistic nerd, but he may not be an idiotic on the bottom line. He's also a helpless type person, due to the way he looks kind of helpless in image. The way Screech is considered helpless in the original class is caused when he was included into the difficult original class carelessly in a hurry, on the first place.

You might think the original class is underrated in America and the new class is overrated in America in the meantime. But don't get shocked when the original class becomes overrated in the whole world and the new class is considered underrated in the whole world in the meantime.
