View Full Version : Random, everyday moments that remind you of UM
SheRaaa 06-19-2014, 12:39 PM Ok so we're all big fans of UM, right? Sometimes I have these random little moments where I can't help but be reminded of the show and laugh!
I recently moved to Phoenix and I work as a pharmacy tech. Anyway, the other night I filled an Rx for a woman whose first named started with a B and whose last name was Bean. I was like, could this be the blushing bride of the infamous Bob Bean?! (obviously when you're bored at work you think of these things, lol)
Also, last night I was taking my break on our patio at work when I heard rustling in the bushes. My first thought was, "omg Chupacabra!" I even saw glowing eyes...it was a stray cat.
MegtheEgg86 06-19-2014, 01:12 PM I love this thread already.
- I posted recently in another thread about my passing a sign for Swansea, South Carolina while on the interstate and wondering why that sounded so familiar. The truck driver interviewed in the Gail Delano segment was from Swansea.
- Bologna and cheese = forever Permon Gilbert.
- I was knitting something with a golden-colored yarn a couple of weeks ago and kept thinking of the Ted Loseff segment and that "mustard-colored shirt".
TheCars1986 06-19-2014, 04:18 PM Every time I'm driving down the road and I see a dirty pick up truck, I always look to see if there's a fish decal in the window.
elg0rd0 06-19-2014, 04:49 PM The world is a lot stranger than I thought in my imagination.
MegtheEgg86 06-19-2014, 05:28 PM Every time I'm driving down the road and I see a dirty pick up truck, I always look to see if there's a fish decal in the window.
Whenever I see a Jaguar, I think of Ed Baker.
TheCafeDisco 06-19-2014, 05:37 PM Nice thread! Well, it's storming where I am so two episodes come to mind.
The "I can make it rain kid"
and the family who somehow has the worst luck getting struck by lightning.
WishfulDreamer 06-19-2014, 09:10 PM and the family who somehow has the worst luck getting struck by lightning.
Last week there was a huge thunderstorm and I thought of this one. The lightning was so close that the brightness of it was more intense than I've ever experienced before. I sometimes think of this segment when going through a storm and want to hurry inside so I don't end up like the poor guy who got hit in the doorway!
Also:
1) Any mention of grills- ''I gotta light the grill'' Devin Williams
2) Maybe I'll have spaghetti for dinner thoughts= ''Well, we can go into my house for some spaghetti'' Colleen Reed segment. Sad one, but that line is funny.
3) You guys will laugh at me for this one, but whenever my back gets really hot, I still think of the SHC episode with the lady who caught fire randomly!
4) Seeing tacky, flashy jackets---> Tony Alamo
5) Red wine and coffee or mention of really sensitive skin--> Kelly Finnigan
dynoguy88 06-19-2014, 09:42 PM Last week I went to an ATM to withdraw a 20 after dark (around 9:00 p.m.) and all I could think about was the people on this board yelling at me for doing such a thing.
wiseguy182 06-20-2014, 12:23 AM - I was knitting something with a golden-colored yarn a couple of weeks ago and kept thinking of the Ted Loseff segment and that "mustard-colored shirt".
When I saw the word 'golden', I thought you were going to say Miss Katie's gold flakes
I'm reminded of UM all the time, probably too many times to mention. I know I've said this before, but I've always wanted to work the phrase "I didn't think all of that could come from one pina colada" into my conversations one day.

 I remember that.
That also makes me think of Huey Littleton's use of the word "furrow", which I have thereafter always associated with him.
TheCars1986 06-20-2014, 09:35 AM I sometimes pronounce the word "head" like "heed" kind of the way Norman Ladner's father does.
ohtova 06-21-2014, 01:37 AM I recently saw a TV commercial advertising a business, whose telephone number began with 1-800-876....
RobinW 06-21-2014, 03:01 AM I can't tell you how many times I've seen a Pepsi machine and started visualizing it with the logo blacked out like in the Connecticut River Valley Killer rest stop attack scene.
justins5256 06-21-2014, 10:13 PM Today I went through customs at the border and was wearing sunglasses. The border patrol officer asked me to take them off. It took every bit of self control to not say "why?!"
WishfulDreamer 06-21-2014, 10:33 PM Today I went through customs at the border and was wearing sunglasses. The border patrol officer asked me to take them off. It took every bit of self control to not say "why?!"
Same segment connection: I'm about to move back to the US after working overseas and don't want to end up saying anything like this:
"I closed out a bank account. I forgot to fill out the forms. I'm sorry!"
SheRaaa 06-21-2014, 11:45 PM I can't tell you how many times I've seen a Pepsi machine and started visualizing it with the logo blacked out like in the Connecticut River Valley Killer rest stop attack scene.
I work second shift so I get off around 11:00pm most nights, and living in Phoenix you want to stop at every soda machine you can to get a cool drink. Every time I do grocery shopping after work (it's kinda deserted that late) I walk past this old, derelict soda machine and I think of the CT River Valley case too.
Dr Will Hatch 06-22-2014, 02:29 AM Every morning, I expect to get a letter postmarked "Columbus, Ohio", and handwritten in big, blocky letters. I am always disappointed when I do not.
rerungirl 07-30-2014, 10:57 AM I work for a government agency and it’s not unusual for people to leave strange messages on our office voicemail after hours. Some mornings I half expect to hear “Judy Himes is alive and living in Omaha,” but it hasn’t happened yet.
LilMissKryssy 09-18-2014, 12:18 PM I've had flashes of unsolved mysteries a few times over the years when I've walked home from our local bar alone at night in the summer. It's only half a mile from home and I live in a pretty safe cute town but of course I always think about show when that happens.
benoitbabe 12-06-2014, 02:51 PM Just the other day I found my mother's adopted sister and am in the process of reuniting her with my gram. I was looking for the UM cameras the whole time I'll tell ya.:D
meggiebyte85 12-11-2014, 10:03 PM My boss likes to leave early on Fridays (which is impossible because she's late everyday and takes forever with each patient) so I told her, in a mock-inspirational tone, "you can do it! we can build it together! [referring to the dream of actually leaving early]" My extremely dense boss thought I was being serious and was complimenting me on my positive attitude. I just shook my head and thought to myself "if she only knew what happened to the employer after that dandy quote was made." Muahahaha.
If I go out at night and forget my phone and wonder if I should drive back and get it or just drive on I just think back to old UM episodes of kidnapping and unsolved murders. "...she was never seen again."
ATM's at night? Forget it. I don't want some creepy man appearing to the side of me in the atm security photos.
Whenever I'm listening to Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" it reminds of the cop or detective in the Kristie Gunderson Lee case. "..blood stains on the carpet."
DALLASTEXAN!! 12-12-2014, 03:55 AM Every time I drove by a semi in ohio lol.
SheRaaa 12-12-2014, 03:56 PM Last night we had a delicious holiday dinner catered at my job, and apparently our scrumptious feast was pretty high in sodium b/c afterwards I was SO FREAKIN' THIRSTY. I finished my water bottle at work, thus running out of H20, and as soon as my shift ended I went -- tires spinning -- into the first gas station I could find for a refreshing soda....of course, yet again I thought of the stabbing victim in the New Hampshire Serial Killer case....
When you're thirsty, you're thirsty!

I know its been discussed ad nauseam, but what a disaster of a story that one is for all involved.
meggiebyte85 12-19-2014, 01:00 AM I find myself memorizing license plates thanks to Dennis Depue.
If I draw a blank (which is often) I just simply reply "I have to get back to the fish" and just walk away.
SheRaaa 12-20-2014, 07:51 PM I had another one happen to me at work the other night:
It was slow at work and thankfully we're allowed to just sit around and chit chat when that happens. Anyway, my co-worker, who is drinking a can of Monster energy drink, turns to me and is like, "hey, did you ever see that youtube video of that lady who claims this stuff is like, evil?"
Me, interest piqued: "Umm, no, haha. What video?"
My co-worker goes on to tell me that apparently someone on the internet (LOL) has decided Monster is....satanic! Bwaha!
Pretty amusing stuff:

justins5256 12-20-2014, 08:10 PM The other day I realized that the university I attend actually has a building named after Max Planck. Of course, my thoughts immediately shifted to the NDE segment with Tom Sawyer.

Nice.
We had a lecture hall in the bottom floor of the McClung museum--the same McClung family Ellen McClung Berry was born into. There's also an art scholarship named after her specifically as she was once an art professor at the University of Tennessee.
My husband randomly threw in a "Why don't you guys just leave us...alone" (the infamous acting in the Mark Adams segment) in conversation this week. I cracked up because while he does watch UM from time to time with me, I never thought he actually pays much attention to the segments.

Cori aka ChrisSCrush 01-01-2015, 06:28 AM On Wednesday, I had the iron turned on high and was very annoyed that it wasn't working. I then saw the plug had pulled out of the socket. I thought, well, if I was like that one lady on UM, I could have powered it just with my annoyance! :woohoo:
justins5256 01-09-2015, 11:24 AM I'm in the midst of filling out applications for Ph.D. programs. I have found that many require a letter describing why you want to be admitted. One of the programs I am looking at is very new with their inaugural class starting next fall. Obviously, I'm writing about that in my letter and how it will be exciting to be a part of a new program. My thoughts shifted to Bonnie Wilder and I'm so tempted to write something like "it's a new program we can build it together!"

DALLASTEXAN!! 03-20-2015, 02:19 AM When you see two adult males riding speed bikes in a typically quiet-dead neighborhood at midnight. Stayed late tonight at work and saw that on my way home. Instantly thought of this thread after it crossed my mind that they could be criminals.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 04-16-2015, 12:19 AM From time to time little scenarios run through my mind, such as, "Well, I emailed my sisters before starting for such-and-such a place, so they'll know where to start looking for my remains." :whatever:
My old cell phone made a sort of musical tone turning on and then took so long warming up I was sure I would witness a crime, go desperately to call 911, and the criminal would hear my phone turning on and come over and kill me before it was even warmed up! phone: My new phone is much quicker and quieter! phone2:

WishfulDreamer 07-10-2015, 02:40 PM Wasn't feeling so great and took medication last night. The location of the manufacturer? Woonsocket, RI. *shudder*
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 03-12-2016, 01:27 AM Okay, there is this show on TruTV, not one of the paranormal or true crime programs I normally go for, but when up against it I try "funny" programs. One such, World's Dumbest, I generally find actually funny, featuring stupid criminals and other fare, but a ripoff called Almost Genius is almost unbearable--it should really be called Almost Maimed or Killed, since most of the films feature people doing things they really shouldn't have tried in the first place, involving skateboards and long flights of cement steps, and were spared being seriously injured or killed either by guardian angels or dumb luck.
In this one video, a girl (maybe late teens-early 20s) wasn't really doing anything wrong. She was tooling around on a watercraft, slowly and near shore, not being reckless, just laughing and having her picture taken. She left the watercraft and literally took two steps when some maniac absolutely rammed her now unoccupied craft with another watercraft. My mind flashed to that girl in Florida run over by a boat. This girl would have been broadsided! Here is a link to the video: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/08/05/jet-ski-crash-video_n_5650618.html (My sister is a doctor and could not watch Funniest Home Videos for this reason--too many people missed the ER or the morgue by two inches!)

Because of the "Debbie" segment, I lock my car as soon as I get in it. No sitting and fumbling around, no waiting until I've put everything down. Nope.

I keep my car locked because of the Gretchen Burford case. And even though locking my car has become a natural reflex for me, I still check the backseat of my car before entering every single time because of Gretchen. I've been doing that for 16 years now and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.
jjmcgr 03-12-2016, 02:08 PM Wasn't feeling so great and took medication last night. The location of the manufacturer? Woonsocket, RI. *shudder*
I know Woonsocket well. It is a French Canadian industrial city on the Blackstone River in the northeast corner of Rhode Island. CVS started there and still has its headquarters in the city,
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 03-12-2016, 09:41 PM I keep my car locked because of the Gretchen Burford case. And even though locking my car has become a natural reflex for me, I still check the backseat of my car before entering every single time because of Gretchen. I've been doing that for 16 years now and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.
In my case, I think it was an episode of America's Most Wanted in which an abductor locked a woman in the trunk of her car, let the car roll downhill as if he were ditching it in water, and other horrible things. She finally ended up half-naked in the woods, tied to a tree, and would have died had two young girls not discovered her in time.
I was fairly hyper-aware due to attending what I learned years later was actually the third most dangerous college campus in America. It was in such a rural area at the time I kept thinking, if it is this bad here, how bad must cities be? I was terribly surprised when the Central Park jogger case and the Utah tourist stabbed on the New York subway made national news. Since the age of ten I had simply accepted and taken for granted that at least ten or twenty people were raped and murdered in New York on any average day and more on some days, which went double for the subway and the park!
One of several times I most feared becoming a victim was right after college graduation--still about two years before Unsolved Mysteries first appeared. I went to the Chicago area, staying with friends, but traveling by day alone, on a trip which was my graduation present, and took a cab to the Field Museum. I could tell by the cabbie's looks and foreign accent and the name I glimpsed on his ID that he was of Middle Eastern/Arab descent but did not note his exact name. He behaved very strangely, at first saying he didn't know where the Field Museum was, that there were several, but I made him understand I wanted the one with the dinosaurs. He started pestering me that instead of going to a boring museum I should come home with him! Whether or not I answered, I must have looked alarmed because he said, "It's all right; my sister's there," and kept asking, "Why don't you?"
What I should have done (and hope and trust I would have had this occurred after I started watching UM), was say, "I'd be glad to get together with you later, but I am meeting friends who expect me at the museum in fifteen minutes" (of course, no one was, but make him think I would soon be reported missing) "but give me your name and phone number so I can contact you." I would then, when I got home, find the most recent Chicago Yellow Pages I could (which larger libraries had then), write every friggin' cab company in that part of the state, and say, "Here is this guy's name and phone number. If you employ him, FIRE THE BASTARD, NOW, if you don't, DON'T HIRE HIM!" I really hope this is what the next potential victim did!
As it was, I was really afraid to say anything. I just decided if he tried to drive me anywhere that did not look like it led to the museum, when he slowed down in traffic I would fling myself from the cab screaming bloody murder until I attracted attention. After he dropped me, at the museum after all, I had to go into the bathroom and spend some moments calming down. I was shaking and pouring sweat, and my heart was pounding fit to burst.

And you won't ever see me at any rest stop if there aren't many people there or if it's dark; even if it's 6 p.m. (Dwayne Mcckorkendale).

Yup. I became even more hyper-vigilant after I became a criminal defense attorney and remembered the tragic facts of Gretchen's case. I found it so ironic that she was murdered by a person who she would have argued tooth and nail for in the courtroom...
Random: Was it widely publicized that her killer was caught (http://www.paloaltoonline.com/news/2008/02/22/burford-killer-im-crying-a-river-of-tears-inside) and sentenced to life without parole? It was news to me... All I can say is "Yay for DNA!"

Yeah, that was frightening all right. There were actually two other times I was in a vehicle alone with the driver (one other was also a cabbie) when I feared something might go wrong--maybe I'll write about them sometime--but this was notable because the guy was so out of line and so insistent and persistent when I was not responding positively if at all. When I'm in a panic like that, especially back before UM, I don't think till much later what I should have done so yes it's lucky nothing bad happened.

DALLASTEXAN!! 04-01-2016, 02:40 AM When you go camping and you hear the crickets chirping late at night and see flashlights shining near your tent. Makes it hard to sleep.

A Virgin Mary Madonna or some other religious item will often remind me of the Catholic-related mysteries. My dad complained that all the religious segments were Catholic, though in fact the church at Beatrice, Nebraska was Protestant, the Cokeville, Wyoming angels were LDS, the Kentucky angels I believe were Protestant. (I think of them sometimes when a picture doesn't turn out right.) Mom and I learned that Catholic school questions have rote answers which kids could recite by heart, there is a Catholic idea that inevitable suffering can be offered as a sort of gift, and other useful little tidbits not always vouchsafed to Protestants.
Charlie99909 04-04-2016, 05:01 PM I wouldn't mind someone using that line on me lol
Or when Robert Stack says that Jerry Palus considered himself something of a ladies man, I always think of Crow from MST3K saying something along the lines of "who wouldn't?" or something equally snarky.
Steve1990 04-14-2016, 02:51 AM Every time I go by the home where Kurt Sova partied. It's been killing me to go inside.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 06-09-2016, 02:45 AM Every time I am about to close a deal, particularly involving loading something into the car, and/or need help loading a large item into the car, I start glancing around nervously for a dude to hit me with a hammer. Sad but true. :smash:
soilentgreen 06-09-2016, 02:50 PM I've tossed out, "Cheaper, but will do," and "He looked (at me) like he was just about to enjoy a large steak," on a few occasions.

Due to UM I tend to be a lot more observant when I load up equipment, and I don't talk on my phone when I'm walking around in public.
DALLASTEXAN!! 06-10-2016, 03:17 AM I've said it before but it's worth mentioning. Every time I drive on interstates in the US. Stopping at rest stops is when I get that creepy watch your back feeling.
NYSleuth 06-24-2016, 09:27 PM When I'm driving, I am acutely aware of older pick-up trucks with water inspired decals in their back windows...especially flying fish decals. Angela Hammond.
UMFaninMD 06-25-2016, 11:05 PM Quite a few years back I had two young guys come to my door. I'm not sure what they wanted but I had an uneasy feeling about them and got them to leave my porch. They went across the street and stood under the streetlight, not moving. It was at night and I ended up calling the police. I wasn't the only one, and the cops came and they moved along. It reminded me of the Cindy James segment where her friend Agnes Woodcock supposedly saw the mysterious stalker across the street from Cindy's home after finding her assaulted on the floor. We don't get a lot of foot traffic in my neighborhood so anytime I see someone I don't know, especially at night, hanging around, I do get a bit spooked, and that creepy UM music starts playing in my head.

I'm not apprehensive about stopping at a rest stop during the day, especially during the summer since you're bound to see tons of vacationers.
But once the sun goes down? No thank you.

I used to frequent rest stops in my late teens/early 20's. Until I read that Dale Eaton picked/kidnapped Lisa Kimmel simply because she happened upon the rest stop at the right time.
Yeah. After reading that, I quit stopping at rest stops altogether.

Yes, I don't do rest stops after dark - ever. I've been watching UM since I was a child, so I never have.
Usmysteriesmaniac 06-28-2016, 10:25 PM I recently thought of U.M. when a muffler in my car was going bad. It reminded me of the Dan Wilson case, when his mind got messed up by the trouble he was having with his vehicle, which he seemingly wasn't aware of. That of which was what also sadly, more than likely cost him his life as a result. I know I'm not dare driving my car anywhere, until it's fixed for that matter as well, for obvious reasons!
MegtheEgg86 06-29-2016, 07:25 AM Whenever I throw a used needle and syringe into the sharps container at work, I always think of that line from the Michael Swango segment: "Hypodermics aren't just left lying around."
Padfoot 07-01-2016, 05:25 AM When I'm driving, I am acutely aware of older pick-up trucks with water inspired decals in their back windows...especially flying fish decals. Angela Hammond.
If I ever saw an older truck with a jumping fish decal in the back window I'd follow it until I ran out of gas.
This is ridiculous, but if an idling semi or some other quiet engine is close to me for too long I start to think I might be hearing the hum.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 07-05-2016, 03:40 AM Kinda sad, but when I use the mirror, I don't stand directly in front of it and look at my own reflection. I stand slightly to one side (away from the door) and look to the side of my reflection in case some weirdo might be reflected in the far edge. Of course, I could just close the door when using the mirror, but that would give me no reaction time if he's on he other side of the door. omg:

That's not ridiculous. That's awesome. :)
SheRaaa 07-06-2016, 11:20 PM I work in a very busy section of downtown, and I was laughing this morning at the notorious human resource lady's comment in the Bonnie Wilder segment: "You don't just get lost in a crowd if you are ENORMOUS" or something along those lines, LOL.
Clearly that comment was made far before today's obesity epidemic, bwaha. Everyone is enormous!
justins5256 09-02-2016, 06:05 AM The other night I went on a date with a woman who told me she was a single mom. Her daughter's name: Isabella.
Of course, my mind immediately shifted to the "ghost" Isabella Krammer from the Mann haunted house segment. I kept that nugget to myself, however.

Ha! Well played! But if you went for it and she liked UM it may have been a sign:)
For me it's these darn bicycles I see everyday. Especially when people are really booking it. Always think of Mickey and Trudy Thompson.

Or the Bicycle Bandit. Maybe it's just me but I remember watching that segment and thinking the dude needed to ride that bicycle more.

true I don't know why I never think about that one when see bicycles. bicycles, interstates, and rest stops all make me think of UM. the rest stops in Korea are ridiculous. they are like shopping malls and they are crowded with people. nothing like the sparse unpopulated rest stops in the USA that are bone chilling for me...thanks to UM.
recently my sister was traveling to you guessed it Omaha area to visit my brother. and my mom suggested to her if she got tired stop and sleep at a rest stop and let the truck drivers protect you. wowza!
WishfulDreamer 09-09-2016, 09:58 PM A black pickup truck kind of blocked the road on my way home earlier this week. Of course he didn't get out of the car and do anything and he put the hazards on and left enough room for me to squeeze by, but I couldn't help but think of the Carol segment afterward.
MissFit29 09-11-2016, 02:15 PM I don't usually go to rest stops by myself either. There's a few that I trust because I know they're staffed or there's a state patrol station there. But once at one of the "safe" ones my husband walked in on a guy who was naked in the bathroom and that was enough for him. He's a little wary of that one now.
I shop at the mall where Dru Sjodin was kidnapped, and that ALWAYS crosses my mind when I'm in the parking lot. I'm not afraid to go by myself, but sheesh, it's really the last mall in the world where you would have thought that could have happened.

I regularly shop at the mall where Christopher Wilder lured his only surviving victim into his car. It may be in L.A. county, but the vicinity is quite safe and violent crime is extremely rare. I think about it from time to time.
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 10-08-2016, 05:42 PM The computer hammer murder case I already mentioned in connection with loading and unloading heavy equipment from cars, but it bears bringing up again as this one I literally think about practically every day. In October 1992, Jeremy Rolfs was seriously injured and his fianceé Heather Uffelman was killed after being beaten by a hammer by a man calling himself "Tom Johnson" who stole $30,000.00 worth of computer equipment so cumbersome that Jeremy had to help "Tom" load it into his car. "Tom" was never identified or caught and the mystery remains unsolved. Less than five years later, Jeremy was killed in a head on car crash by a driver who apparently fell asleep at the wheel.
Every time I have problems with technical equipment (which for the past several months seems to be every day) I ponder how a used laptop easily lifted and probably obtainable for a couple hundred dollars could run circles around this equipment for which someone was willing to kill--not to mention that equipment of such capabilities is common now and was rare then--why was the killer not caught through the equipment being identified?
Cori aka ChrisSCrush 10-20-2016, 02:30 PM After being resurfaced and repainted several times, my kitchen wall looks great. Have not yet got around to hanging a calendar or anything on which to post messages about events and appointments, so I still stick them to the wall with Scotch tape. Even though the tape is removable and non-damaging, every time I always think, "Need More Baby Bottles"!

God, that guy was a jerk. I wish she'd dumped a milkshake on his head before leaving.
MegtheEgg86 07-08-2018, 07:25 PM I had a moment in church this morning.
We sang a (beautiful) song that one of our congregants had written in the wake of the fire that destroyed Reggie White's church, which was featured on UM. There had been a big rally to support the Inner City Church and ours was one of the ones who participated in it.
It just really brought home the reality that these cases are visceral and real. It's good to be reminded of that.
TheCars1986 07-09-2018, 09:59 AM When my wife doesn't text me all day, I automatically think of coming home to a Paul Pollis like situation.
DALLASTEXAN!! 07-12-2018, 05:35 PM I heard a raven squawking today and thought of general Wayne inn. Just needed the low piano note.
justins5256 07-20-2018, 04:55 PM Recently, I was jogging in the park and I saw some teenagers smoking weed.
It dawned on me that in the UM universe surely these kids would have murdered me and staged it to look like a suicide which the incompetent local cops would accept without investigation.

Or it could have been the other way around. You could have done something to them and an incompetent medical examiner would have declared the weed did them in. :p
