Yaya DaCosta has landed the greatest role of all, playing Whitney Houston in Lifetime’s upcoming biopic of the late star, TVLine has learned exclusively.
The TV-movie will chronicle Houston’s volatile relationship with singer-songwriter Bobby Brown during her meteoric rise to musical superstardom.
Since making her television debut in Cycle 3 of "America’s Next Top Model", DaCosta has gone on to score recurring roles on shows including "All My Children", "Ugly Betty" and "House".
She’s also had big-screen success, most recently coming off a role in Lee Daniels’ The Butler.
Angela Bassett (American Horror Story: Coven) will direct the yet-untitled biopic, which is aiming for a 2015 release.

isiahthomas 06-07-2014, 01:23 PM I was wondering who she is because i never heard of her. Now that you posted she was in The Butler movie, i remember her. She's not a well known actress and i'm surprised Angela Bassett chose her to play Whitney. This will be Angela's first time directing a movie. I wish her luck and i hope it's a success. I love Angela and i know she loved Whitney since they did Waiting To Exhale movie. I wonder what Whitney's family thinks about this. A movie like this should be on the big screen and not the small screen.
JamesG 07-10-2014, 01:19 PM First Look: Yaya DaCosta as Whitney Houston in Lifetime's Biopic

July 10, 2014
Lifetime’s early-2015 biopic Whitney Houston (working title) — directed by the singer’s Waiting to Exhale costar Angela Bassett and starring former "America’s Next Top Model" contestant Yaya DaCosta — just began shooting.
But DaCosta has already re-created the iconic cover of the pop diva’s 1987 Whitney album. And her *modeling background came in handy for the quick shoot.
Laughs the star, “I just looked at the picture and did the pose!” Somewhere Tyra is smizing proudly.

isiahthomas 07-16-2014, 11:27 AM JamesG, i saw at another website yesterday that Whitney's daughter dissed Angela Bassett because Angela won't put her in the movie to play Whitney hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Whitney's daughter called Angela a curse word. I think she called her a b*tch and she said when i get my grammy and a oscar one day, that b*tch is gonna wish she had put me in the movie. She's ******** if she thinks she's gonna get a grammy and a oscar one day hahahahahahahahahahahaha.
JamesG 07-23-2014, 12:49 PM Whitney Houston's Family Slams Lifetime Biopic: "Please Let Her Rest"

Almost as quickly as Lifetime amplified the celebrity-biopic game, the complaints started rolling in. First the Aaliyah movie elicited pushback from the late singer's family and lost its lead star.
Now, the Whitney Houston biopic has attracted the attention of Cissy Houston, and she is not pleased. Whitney's mother, 80, issued a statement to "Entertainment Tonight" in which she slammed Lifetime's decision to dramatize the singer's life.
"Lifetime has chosen to go ahead with the movie about Whitney in spite of my family’s objections. No one connected with this movie knew Whitney or anything about her relationship with Bobby. In the two years since Whitney’s death, many people have stepped forward to speak about their close relationship with her. I find it difficult to believe people who knew and supposedly loved her would participate in a movie about her done by folks who didn’t know her.
We are exhausted by the continuing misinformation and comments offered by people who did not know her. Please please let her rest."
Cissy isn't the first Houston to speak out against the project, directed by Angela Bassett and starring Yaya Dacosta.
Pat Houston, Whitney's former manager and sister-in-law, told TMZ in May that "Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie, and if she were here today, this would not be happening."
Because of the family's disenchantment with the biopic, Whitney's vocals will not be used in the movie. Deborah Cox (of 'Nobody's Supposed to Be Here' fame) will record the songs.

isiahthomas 07-23-2014, 12:54 PM I agree with Cissy's comments. Whitney shouldn't have a tv movie done about her. If a movie is gonna be done about her, it needs to come to theatres because she was a very good singer. I wonder what Angela Bassett thinks about Cissy's comments but it's obvious that Cissy isn't happy with Angela doing this movie. I wonder if Cissy and Angela talk to each other because if Angela and Whitney were close, then i think Angela should take Cissy's advice and not do this movie.

Flying Dutchman 12-06-2014, 10:15 PM Curious about something. Angela Basset is directing this TV Movie. Didn't she play Tina Turner who had a similar relationship with Ike as Whitney and Bobby had?

Yes, Angela Bassett played Tina Turner in the What's Love Got To Do With It movie.
isiahthomas 12-07-2014, 08:47 PM I saw the previews already when I saw the Aaliyah movie and I liked what I saw. I'm gonna check it out because I wanna support Angela Bassett's directing debut. Angela is a good actress and I think the Whitney movie is gonna be good. Whitney was a beautiful woman and I miss her.

DJM77 01-18-2015, 12:30 AM I was expecting the movie to cover a much wider frame of time. I guess they just wanted to spend as much time as possible focusing on Whitney's relationship with Bobby. I could have done without all the sex scenes. If Whitney was really into drugs as early on as the movies implies then I'm surprised.
JamesG 01-19-2015, 07:48 PM Lifetime’s Whitney movie on Saturday night drew 4.5 million total viewers, marking the cabler’s most watched telecast since Flowers in the Attic (6.1 mil) a year ago.

isiahthomas 01-21-2015, 05:07 PM I just went to the Lifetime network website and I saw that you can watch the movie. So I'm gonna watch it this weekend or I might watch it tomorrow.
isiahthomas 01-27-2015, 01:41 PM I saw Whitney last Saturday and it was good. Yaya DaCosta who played Whitney is cute and she has a nice body. I know Whitney's family was pissed at the movie because Yaya was doing drugs several times and I know her family was mad at Angela Bassett for making Whitney look like a crackhead LOL. I also noticed that when Yaya was singing, she wasn't singing Whitney's real vocals because I know Angela didn't wanna get sued by Whitney's family.
Dr. Thong 01-27-2015, 06:02 PM I was expecting the movie to cover a much wider frame of time. I guess they just wanted to spend as much time as possible focusing on Whitney's relationship with Bobby. I'm not. Cissy Houston wrote about this in her book. Whitney was dabbling with stuff before Bobby came along.
And I did not watch this movie. I mean, it's Lifetime! If anyone is expecting a balanced, nuanced portrait of Whitney's life, this is the wrong place. Of course, they're going to focus on the tabloid and trashy side of things. That's what Lifetime is all about.
