View Full Version : UM OTPs or ships?
Oldschooler81 05-29-2014, 03:20 AM This might sound kinda silly, but let me explain: in fandom terms, to "ship" means to think or want two people to be in a romantic relationship. Did/do you ever think anyone from vintage 88-96 UM had crushes on someone else, or that you wished they could've been together? And "OTP" = one true pair.
I always thought the circa 1988 Teresa Dahl kinda had feelings for Matt Chase and liked him as more than a friend, just something about the way she said "He's my best friend, he means so much to me". Granted, in easygoing liberal LA in 1988, it was probably hardly uncommon for a guy and a girl (especially early 20s close friends) to live together, but I always did wonder if they were dating or anything.
As a kid I also used to LOVE that Christie Mutzfeld resumed her relationship with Todd Kelly (at least up until the time he was murdered :( ) and seemed ready to move on from that violent and possessive jerk Mahfuz Huq. Sure they were both young, but I think their relationship could've sustained had it not been for Mahfuz letting his anger get the best of him. Her & Todd were both 19 in 1989 and Mahfuz was 25 too...granted not a big age gap, and close enough it could still work, but enough to be kinda different too.
WishfulDreamer 05-29-2014, 07:59 AM TheCafeDisco and I just recently spoke of our happiness that Julie Cooper and Tim Santi got engaged after he rescued her.
I really liked the couple from the matchmaker ghost segment (and how they got together because he walked her back to her cabin on a spooky night). I also had a strange hope that Lavar Bates would get back together with Patti, the woman he had a child with and whom he only discovered because he was filmed in a UM update- but I think he may have been married already at that time, so whoops.

Actually, there's been some speculation on this forum that Matt Chase might have been gay and possibly in a relationship with Teresa's brother. Obviously, there would be no need to mention Matt's sexual orientation on the UM segment unless it was relevant to the crime (unlike, say, the William Hendrick murder, where he may have been specifically targeted because he was gay).
Anyway, I've always wondered if there was anything between Annette Burnside and the co-worker who was shot when she was murdered. A search revealed that the co-worker's name was David Otteni and that Jim Burnside believed he was having an affair with Annette at the time of the murder:

Mind you, the article doesn't confirm they were having an affair, only that Jim SAID they were having an affair, so it could have been one of his insane delusions. It says Otteni was 44 years old at the time of the shooting, so he was nearly 20 years older than Annette, but he seemed like a likable enough guy in his UM interview and appeared to be very protective of her. Annette definitely deserved a happy relationship with someone like that after being married to a monster.
88keys 05-29-2014, 11:16 AM I've been in fandoms and the fanfic community for years. I have no problem with 'ships in fandoms, but shipping REAL people together just gives me the willies. Feels like it crosses some kind of line. JMO.

Oh wow, I did suspect Teresa's brother Steven was gay (he had the stereotypical voice and stuff) but hadn't realized Matt could've been bi/gay and in some kind of relationship with him!
Yeah, Annette's co-worker "Dave" seemed like a nice guy. Even though he would've been only several years younger than Jim, he clearly was protective and caring of her, unlike that sociopathic scumbag...so the age difference wouldn't have seemed like the big deal that it was between her and Jim. This actually makes me wish they were seeing each other, just so he could've gotten her away from him in time.
Necco 05-29-2014, 06:29 PM While I'm not going to mix and match pairs that weren't already paired off, there were a few couples that seemed to be in an immense amount of love and I think, if things had turned out differently, would have ridden off into the sunset together:
Angela Hammond and Rob Shafer
The OTHER CA who was posted here about the Cynthia Anderson segment and her guerrilla artist love
Mac McDonald and his girlfriend
