It's called Long Kiss Goodnight. They say how he had a drinking problem and a temper and how he went to rehab. The show likes to throw red herrings at you so they show 2 different people confusing him for Barry Hartman of the 49ers. For the most part they go with the license plate theory. I'm going to watch it again so if anyone has questions let me know.

Anything left out of the UM broadcast?

They definetly went with the 49er theory. Supposably many patrons at the bar/restraunt were hassling Dick about being a 49er player.A lot of minor details about dick and Jeans relationship were brought up, I believe some details were added to "spruce up" the show. It was surprising to see Jean 20 years older, It's easy to forget how old UM is.

Something else that they mentioned, that I'm pretty sure UM never got into, was Jean said she recognized the man who shot Dick: he was sitting at the bar in the restaurant. Also he was hassled by another guy outside the restaurant who thought he was also Barry Hartman, and when Dick insulted him he got pissed.

I thought that too when I first watched it, but I think what they meant was she recognized the shooter as the guy that pulled behind them outside the restaurant. Like I said before they love to put red herrings all over the show.

Good point. I shouldn't confuse this show as investigation journalism.

Yikes! That's a bad wig, sorry to say. They didn't show Jean's face in the UM episode, but you could see that she had short hair. I wonder how old she is now. I hope she changed her 49er Hugs license plate after Dick was shot.

So I just watched this:

I hate these ID shows that try to tell a story in 30 mins. They pack it full of red herrings and they repeat scenes so many times to capture the viewers attention, I suppose?

I find it odd that they cut the car chase down to basically nothing, focusing more on Dick and Jean's simple relationship. They conclude with the license plate theory as well.

Overall, nice to see Jean (I do not think she had anything to do with this after watching her 20 years later) but really nothing new, other than Dick having a confirmed alcohol problem and he had recently gotten out of rehab.

This is my least favorite thing about Dates From Hell. There are some great stories so it could be so much better.

I love true crime but they literally wear me out on ID. They are so dumbed down and they take the simplest incident and turns it into a huge incident.

So I just saw this episode.

Does anyone think it's possible, assuming the reenactment is fairly accurate, that the shooter could have been someone in the restaurant that didn't like the way Dick was speaking to Jean in the restaurant? That was a thought that crossed my mind.

I also have to say I think that the 49ers connection makes about a thousand times greater sense now that we now he looked like a specific player and was often mistaken for that player in public (twice in that one night alone, again if the reenactment is accurate).

Sorry to ask this but has she had a sex change?

I was surprised by her appearance. Of course, time is usually never kind and we all have to age.

Aside from the obvious bad wig which is covering most of her face, her features are very masculine. The brow, the nose, the large space between the nose and upper lip, the chin/jaw, (the harsh heavy eyebrow pencil doesn't help) even the expression in her eyes comes across as a strong minded male, and not female, imo.

Most women I've seen who have some strong masculine features don't usually look this much like a man.

Since she was "incognito" on the UM episode, and we never got to see what she looked like, is this pic really her or did she use a be-wigged stand in for this interview?

When I heard her speak, it sounded exactly like the woman in the silhouetted UM interview.

The thing that touched me the most was how much she cared about Dick, even when he wasn't always at his best. She seemed like a really great friend.

I'm curious, MegtheEgg, did the episode say which 49er player he resembled and if so, which one?

The player was mentioned by name, and I can't remember if it was Harris Barton or Barry Helton. The former seems to make more sense given Hansen's build, but I think he's a dead ringer in the face for the latter. If I were a betting woman, my money would be on Barton. I'm pretty sure Hansen was a lineman on his college team.

I was much greater 49er fan around the time this crime happened - has it really been 25 years since the drive in that second Super Bowl against the Bengals - I can kinda see where folks are coming from with Harris Barton.

Thanks for answering my question.

I shouldn't have laughed, but the face you added made me do it. :p

I'm not a big fan of Dates from Hell, which I find to be really overboard in portraying graphic content (even worse than the UM episode about the Brazos Trail attackers), but I would like to see this episode. This case has always puzzled me and I'm happy to hear this show gives more details.

I also used to think the 49er theory made little sense, but hearing that Dick resembled one of the players makes that theory more likely.

Does anyone know what exit off the freeway this shooting took place? I believe it was in Sunnyvale, CA. Anyone have the specific location? This happened in my area. Very bizarre case.

Just saw the UM segment again after a long time...

I always thought the woman did it, or the guy knew her and was a jealous lover.

The guy parking right behind them, and him just shooting Dick, while she stared in his face for 5-10 seconds and let her go just all seems so odd..

Either one makes much more sense than the 'guy was a 49er hater' theory.

Most likely scenario here is the killer knew the woman who was with Dick, and she felt compelled to protect this person for whatever reason. Jealous lover is certainly plausible.

Yeah, but since it seemed like they were on and off again I wonder if they got into a fight while driving? I'm assuming one or both had been drinking, so it's possible that they got in a heated argument. Dick was a huge dude, so I wonder if he got physical with her and she shot out of self defense?

I'm not sure, but on the subject of on/off again...I thought that part where they are sitting in the car was really cringeworthy ("So, you ready to get things going again?")

I think that's the same segment where she says "Get the Blankety Blank out of here!"

Have they ever considered a reboot for the series with another host since that other dude who played Elliott Ness passed away a long time ago? Unfortunately, I don't remember his name. I know Google's a good friend if I wanna know bad enough. The episodes were fun and could have an impact for young teens who are more vulnerable in their minds as to what's real and what's not, and I can remember being impressed like if they had something about flying saucers or spirits, but it got to the point where you knew they were just trying to yank your chain and that the stories were something that Mister McGee would be writing about if he was real. It might be nice if they showed true stories for once.
Take care and God bless
