"CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler this morning confirmed that the upcoming 12th season of veteran comedy Two And A Half Men will be its last. The network is planning a sendoff similar to that for How I Met Your Mother this season, with co-creator/executive producer Chuck Lorre promising a “season-long event.” Men defied the odds, surviving the meltdown and subsequent firing of original star Charlie Sheen to go on for four more seasons with new leading man Ashton Kutcher."

Could Sheen Return for End of ‘Two and a Half Men'? CBS Noncommital

Upfronts 2014: CBS entertainment chief Nina Tassler says lots of surprises are coming — but Charlie Sheen may not be among them

CBS's announcement that the next season of “Two and a Half Men” will be its last brought an almost immediate question: Could Charlie Sheen return to say goodbye?

Entertainment chief Nina Tassler didn't make any promises. Sheen causes the network endless headaches in 2010 when he began home rehab after a series of binges, and ripped show creator Chuck Lorre.

“I would like to see whatever Chuck would like to do,” Tassler said. “He has assured us that he has a lot of surprises in store. I don't know if that's one of them.”

The show has slipped in recent years, and Angus T. Jones, the titular “half” man, exited after deciding the show went against his religious beliefs. But “Men” has still been a major hit for CBS. A huge show in syndication, it has an estimated value of a billion dollars.

Sheen, who was replaced by Ashton Kutcher, is presently starring in FX's “Anger Management.”

I never openly hope for something to get canceled, but if ever a show needed to be taken behind the barn, it's this one. The entirety of Alan's character development (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/3111900-two-and-a-half-men/page-136#entry16520327) for god knows how long has been "Oh look how broke and cheap Alan is. What a mooch!" and "Look at how sad Alan's sex life is! He's going to go masturbate! LOL!"

I mean Christ... what a horribly written character. And they're making Amy on Big Bang Theory the same way. I can't stomach any more sexually frustrated jokes between those two characters.

If the show had become Ashton and Patton Oswalt and Allan was long gone, it could have been something better than it had a right to be. But even after adding Ashton they still made the show focus on Allan being pathetic too much. Had he been showing any damned growth or at least change, it'd be amazing. And the few times it looked like he might they pulled the rug out and back to normal.

Overall it was an awful show that became largely inoffensive. But it was always, by and large harmless.

I expected this announcement would happen for a number of reasons: Many have hated Two and a Half Men so badly ever since Ashton Kutcher joined the show's cast. While it continued to prosper for the CBS network in the next couple of years since then, its ratings and viewership (during Season 11) have been hitting some all-time lows (1.8 demo rating and just over 8 million viewers). And the sitcom is, like, really expensive to produce, so I believe that the time is right for Two and a Half Men to end its original run.

you realize of course, that judging by current network trends in NEW sitcoms, anything they replace it with will probably be much worse in regards to the aspects that you deem it to be offensive. (re: Friends With Better Lives, etc.)

New shows to replace existing shows do not always have to be "worse" than the existing ones. It's usually one of the "select few" that is liable to end up making the cut for a second season, which means get good ratings/viewership and positive reviews. If a long-running show stops airing first-run, it will logically leave some breathing room for newer and younger shows.

yes, that's obvious; my point was that the networks are constantly upping the ante with overtly sexual and gross-out humor, so thinking that behavior is going to stop with the cancellation of TAAHM is ridiculous.

The TV raunch pioneer was just plain unsavory.

It doesn't really surprise me that it's ending. What does surprise me is that it's lasted this long.

The network let all of these... brilliant... shows go while Chuck Lorre's sitcom ran rampant.
