View Full Version : Eastland uniforms
RetroGuy2000 05-13-2014, 12:03 AM As far as I can tell, Eastland has four uniforms:
1. Red vest, blue tie
2. Blue sweater, red tie
3. Gym: Yellow t-shirts or sweatshirts, yellow shorts or blue track pants
4. Blue blazer
As far as I can recall, only Blair has ever worn the blue blazer. She wore it in "Dope" and again one other time. But what's the sense of having a "uniform" that no-one else has? [Edit: it's been shown that Natalie wore it in "Bus Stop", her graduation episode].

Being Blair Warner, apart from the pack. ;) lol
I kind of always got the sense that the blue sweaters were for underclassmen (sorry Molly, "underclasswomen" ) since we, IIRC, only ever saw Natalie and Tootie wear them. I kind of liked those, and the yellow/blue gym outfits.

For years, I thought this was the case, but in fact, I think there was no real difference in uniform between the upperclass(wo)men and lowerclass(wo)men. In Seasons 2 and 3, Nancy wears a blue sweater in most or all of her episodes, and surely she is one of the older students. Molly, who is obviously younger, wears the red vest in her only Season Two episode, but wore it as well throughout Season One. Tootie, youngest of all, alternates between the red vest and the blue sweater throughout those first four seasons. I've even seen Jo in a blue sweater (episode "Cousin Geri", for example). Later, Alex and Miko wear red vests, too, and surely they are younger than Blair and Jo.
The only girl I don't recall ever seeing in a blue sweater is Blair, and the only girl I don't recall in a red vest (after Season One) is Natalie. Mindy Cohn later said that they kept her in baggy sweaters to make her look fatter during seasons when she had lost weight. Lisa says they always wanted her to look thin, so I guess that's why they kept her out of the blue sweaters.
Edit: Incidentally, I just found another episode of Blair in the blue blazer: "Bought and Sold". The rule appears to be 'blue tie with blue blazer'.

"Oh but Tootie, the play needs you!" That's what I immediately think of when I think of Nancy in a blue sweater, lol.
I think of the red vests/skirts as "all class(wo)men", while thinking of the blue sweaters as generaly for "underclass(wo)men". Like you say, that may not be the case, particularly if the exceptions were purposefully meant to showcase otherwise, but that's just how I've always classified it to myself when watching.

Why? Aren't all of Nancy's Season Two and Three episodes in the blue sweater?

Yeah, "Cousin Geri" is a good example of Jo in a blue sweater. I edited my post above, to make that more clear, and add a second example of Blair in the blue blazer, which I never saw any other Eastland girl wear, that I ever recall.
'80sSitcoms 05-13-2014, 11:23 AM Why? Aren't all of Nancy's Season Two and Three episodes in the blue sweater?
Well now that I think of it she does appear in it in the closing scene of "Gossip", and yes, in "Pretty Babies" and "Dear Me". It's just when you sand "Nancy" and "blue sweater" that was the first image that came to my mind: "Oh Tootie, the play needs you!" lol.

Ah yes, "Bought and Sold". I didn't think of "Dope", but I knew she wore it in a "classic cafeteria" era (lol) episode.

Apparently, Tootie's acting abilities surpassed Nancy's some time between Seasons One and Three.

Yep. Took me a while to find it. There may be other examples as well.
When I was a boy in elementary school, around the time of FOL's Eastland years, boys had white shirts and brown corduroy pants, with the choice of a brown sweater or a brown jacket on cold days. The girls had brown and yellow plaid jumpers, with white shirts underneath. I don't recall any other options; those Eastland girls were very lucky to have more color choices.
(By junior high, uniforms were gone).

I know, right? It should have been:
Tootie: "Oh but Nancy, the play needs you!"
lol...they gave Nancy's acting and Molly's photography to Tootie, and they gave Molly's feminism to Natalie. And of course we all know about the alchemy of Cindy and Sue Ann, with a dash of Molly, going into Jo. lol
Yep. Took me a while to find it. There may be other examples as well.
I want to say there are, but I don't recall for sure. I just vividly remember her wearing it; perhaps because it was so rare?
I never had to do the uniform thing, for which I was very glad!

Exactly. All Nancy was left with by Season Two was Roger (and they almost gave him to Blair, too!), and Sue Ann and Cindy were left with... gossiping, really. I can't think of anything else they were interested in, in Season Two or Three. Molly didn't even get the chance to gossip.
I never had to do the uniform thing, for which I was very glad!
It was a pain. (But I still have my brown jacket from Second Grade, hanging in the back of my closet).
James28 09-21-2020, 09:35 PM How come Natalie switched from the red vest to the blue sweater after the initial four episodes of The Facts of Life?
80s Dude 09-22-2020, 09:02 AM Blair probably bought her own designer Eastland uniform.

James28 10-15-2020, 12:57 AM I just spotted one extremely rare post-season-2-retooling example of Natalie Green wearing the red vest: "The Oldest Living Graduate" (S4 E4). It was during the scene where Eastland holds a luncheon for Marie Thornwell.

Nice find, James! Good eye!
I was curious to see what you saw, so I watched the episode myself... and not only saw the maroon vest on Natalie (which I think she normally only wore during Season 1), but also another curiosity: in the same episode, in an earlier scene Natalie wearing a blue sweater... with a blue tie!
I think that's a wardrobe mistake. I don't recall seeing that combination, except maybe on Jo.
TV Guy 10-17-2020, 01:10 PM Natalie wears the Eastland blue blazer in “Bus Stop,” the episode where she decides not to go to college.

James28 02-20-2021, 12:27 AM Just asking a little "what-if" based on their personalities:
Should Tootie have worn the red vest? Should Jo have worn the blue sweater?

You know, I've seen the girls so often in either the blue sweater or the maroon vest that it actually feels a little awkward when we see them outside of their "standard" uniform. Seeing Natalie in the maroon vest, or seeing Jo in the blue sweater, or Blair in the blue blazer, is quite the novelty.
Although we typically see Tootie in the blue sweater, we also see her often enough in the maroon vest that it doesn't feel shocking, unlike Natalie in the maroon vest.
Cindy and Nancy wear the blue sweaters after Season 1, but I don't recall Sue Ann in one. And of course, Molly only wore the maroon vest in her only post-Season 1 appearance.

I would assume Sue Ann wears the blue sweater in "Gossip" (the last scene), "Sex Symbol" and "Front Page".
And I can't recall for sure if Molly wears a blue sweater in season 1 (possibly?), but it's nice that at least there are season 1 promotional photos where she's wearing one.

In Adoption, Molly wears the blue sweater to the class and continues to wear it in the scene where the 4 girls try to comfort Natalie. Of course Nancy O. and Cindy were missing in this scene. Cindy got seriously Nancied in this episode. Just a one word line in the first half.

Yes! That's where I was picturing her wearing the blue sweater, up in "Natalie's" pseudo-room.
Of course Nancy O. and Cindy were missing in this scene. Cindy got seriously Nancied in this episode. Just a one word line in the first half.
True, but she made a comeback in the second half. In classic Nancy fashion, Nancy remained the Nancied-est.

Way to go, Mols! :)

No, in "Gossip", "Sex Symbol", and "Front Page", Sue Ann is in the maroon vest.

I know, I know, it's even one of my own philosophies, "Never assume"--but who's gonna figure one of our Eastland girls never wore a blue sweater??
Maybe her agent got it into her contract, lol.

--but who's gonna figure one of our Eastland girls never wore a blue sweater??
Ah, but Sue Ann does wear a sweater in the classroom scene in "The Facts of Love", so I just wonder why she didn't during Seasons 2 and 3. At least, I can't think of any sweater moments.
Kind of odd when you think about all the times she wore non-Eastland sweaters over her shoulders, throughout the first season.
Maybe her agent got it into her contract, lol.
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
Agent: My client is tired of wearing sweaters. She's requesting a "no-sweater clause" be appended to her contract.
Producers: Fine. The paperwork is in the basement, with Felice, Julie Anne, and Molly.

Molly's another one where the blue sweater is pretty rare.
Jo, Sue Ann, Blair, and Molly rarely wore the blue sweater. Natalie rarely wore the maroon vest. Tootie, Nancy, and Cindy were mixed.
Blair and Natalie rarely wore the blue blazer, but it is seen on them.
As far as I can recall, Alex, Miko, and Brenda only wore the maroon vest. I only remember Terri and Jenny in the gym uniforms.
Lorimar Television 03-04-2021, 04:25 AM No, in "Gossip", "Sex Symbol", and "Front Page", Sue Ann is in the maroon vest.
Ouch Sue Ann sure zinged our Eightsy
80s Dude 03-04-2021, 09:16 AM You can see Nancy O., Natalie, and part of Jo wearing blue sweaters here.

But that's a whole 2 out of 14 episodes, where they don't wear uniforms in many of them as it is. Sue Ann only wears it, what, once in all of hers?

I only remember the one time, but it's possible there were others.
And is there a classic Eastland episode where no-one wears an Eastland uniform? Maybe the teenage hooker episode? And Brian and Sylvia? Jo's Cousin? The Academy? I really haven't paid attention.
valentina warner 03-04-2021, 06:40 PM I'm amazed at what great memory you guys have!
I never paid much attention to what uniform were worn (on the other hand i noticed the girl's own wardrobe immediately)

Oh, there are plenty:
"Take My Finals, Please!"
"Let's Party!"
"The New Girl Part 1"
Just off the top of my "Facts"-lovin' head. But not "Brian and Sylvia": The older girls have uniforms on in the brief beginning scene in the lounge (if memory serves).

Yeah, I know what you mean. The plots are usually so good that even if I want to watch for uniforms, I end up forgetting, and I end up just watching the episode!

Well, the point is, yes, there are classic uniform-less episodes, lol.
Also probably "A Baby in the House", since Alikins comes to stay the weekend? And Mona's episode where Natalie is at her most unattractive brattiest.
'80sSitcoms 03-05-2021, 02:22 PM Season 1 had a good realistic mix of uniforms and non-uniforms. Ones without uniforms include:

"Molly's Holiday"

...You know, thinking about it, it's kind of strange that "Nina" and "Nina's" friend are in uniforms when the other girls are not, that evening. Although I suppose any kind of reason can be crafted as to why.

Yeah, just checked the Ali-kins episode, and I think that must have been on the weekend, because there's no sign of uniforms either day.

Yes, it was definitely on a weekend. When Mrs. Garrett asks Blair at the end of the show what she's gonna do, Blair closes out the episode by saying, "That's what's so great about Sundays, Mrs. Garrett: You don't have to do anything!"

I agree 100% with BLAIR on that one: weekends (and especially Sundays) are to relax!

'Rough Housing' was definitely a NO uniform episode: BLAIR was dressed like a starlet/Ballerina , and CINDY first as a tomboy, and then a dazzling princess in her outfit for the Harvest Event!

As it turns out, Sue Ann wears the blue sweater at the beginning of "Dope", as well. So "Dope" and "The Facts of Love", for sure.
James28 04-08-2021, 11:24 PM So, do Eastland's students choose between the red vest or the blue sweater, or do they just get both?
RetroGuy2000 04-09-2021, 01:26 AM So, do Eastland's students choose between the red vest or the blue sweater, or do they just get both?
They get both, as Sue Ann, Molly, Tootie, Jo, Natalie, Nancy, and Cindy can all be seen in either the blue sweater or the maroon vest, depending on the episode. I don't ever remember seeing Blair in the blue sweater. It's rare to see Natalie in the maroon vest, or Jo or Sue Ann in the blue sweater (but it does happen).
