by Michael Ausiello
5/9/14
ABC went on a mini-killing spree late Thursday, axing freshman comedies "Trophy Wife" and "Mixology".
The network isn’t commenting on the cancellation buzz, but stars from both programs confirmed the news on Twitter.
Marcia Gay Harden tweeted:
"Thank u 4 watching beloved fans. Parting is such sweet sorrow... @TrophyWifeABC cancelled just hours ago. @ABC_Publicity #season2watch #:("
Expect to hear official news shortly...

"From the start,” says Willa Paskin, "'Trophy Wife' was burdened with a junky name and a bogus time slot. The sweet family comedy would have been a perfect fit after ABC’s hit 'Modern Family,' a perch it never got. Instead, the Sarah Haskins comedy about a young woman who marries into a complex family—a man, his two ex-wives, and three children—had to go it alone and had the poor ratings to prove it.”

The ABC comedy exits tonight having eclipsed “Modern Family” in portraying the politics of a complex family, says Eliana Dockterman. "To its credit, 'Trophy Wife’ directly confronted the complications of divorce that Modern Family often ignores—and did so without vilifying the exes,” she explains. PLUS: The creators (http://tvline.com/2014/05/13/trophy-wife-series-finale-ending-abc/) talk about ending “Trophy Wife,” and the entire cast (http://popwatch.ew.com/2014/05/13/trophy-wife-series-finale/?) made “Trophy Wife” great.

This was a cute show, wish it would have gotten another season. They had some funny characters especially that little kid Bert.

This was on after The Goldbergs, right? yeah I never watched Trophy Wife, as soon as it came on I'd change to something else.

Alan Sepinwall complains about ABC's timeslot decision for Trophy Wife (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/topic/3219285-trophy-wife/page-13) here (http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/abc-reportedly-cancels-trophy-wife-mixology).

I think one reason why The Goldbergs survived so to speak (even though it didn't get great ratings too to the best of my knowledge) is because maybe, the premise (basically a "modern day" Wonder Years or That '70s Show if shot w/ a single camera and set in the 1980s) was easier to digest or follow than Trophy Wife. Also, I think Trophy Wife suffered from what I would consider to be "Cougar Town syndrome". It had an arguably dumb title, that immediately made you think that it was something (e.g. a lowbrow or raunchy, Sex & the City type of show) that it really wasn't about.

I think Trophy Wife should have been picked up it was a good show. I think The Goldbergs survived for the nostalgia aspect of the show.
