It's to date, the last theatrically released movie that she has directed (http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/13436/12-film-directors-who-dont-seem-to-get-the-call). From what I've recently read (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200027/trivia), in her autobiography (http://www.datalounge.com/cgi-bin/iowa/ajax.html?t=12454821#page:showThread,12454821), Penny claims that the reason why she retired from film-making (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200027/board/flat/13666165?p=1) is because her movies had "heart" to them. And after 9/11, studios were mainly interested in producing movies w/ a bunch of action and violence but otherwise, little "heart" too them.
I often assumed that it was because of her health issues (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/movie-talk/576859-what-happened-penny-marshall.html) and not necessarily studio politics for why she hasn't directed another movie in over 10 years.
The arguably misleading advertising (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/archive/index.php/t-362912.html) perhaps didn't help matters (http://popwatch.ew.com/2011/10/11/drive-trailer-lawsuit/comment-page-3/):

I think of this every time I think of one movie in particular. One movies whose advertising was so uplifting, yet the movie was anything but (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NeverTrustATrailer). That movie is Riding in Cars with Boys, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riding_in_Cars_with_Boys#Reaction) which I think is seriously the meanest practical joke (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/topic/5566-riding-in-cars-with-boys-flat-out-lousy/) that an advertising agency can pull on an audience.
Here's the trailer:

How that makes you think of a nice uplifting family movie. Then I saw it once on HBO...
DEAR GOD! That movie is seriously the most depressing movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200027/reviews-207) I've ever seen. It just makes you feel really, really, really sad.
Another good example of this was that Adam Sandler movie with the remote, but that had more to do with the ending while the rest of the movie was represented well in the trailers.
