View Full Version : Mrs. Garrett raising her voice
'80sSitcoms 05-02-2014, 08:51 AM In one of the FOL documentaries Charlotte Rae mentions how so many people come up to her and say how they loved her on FOL and they wish they had their own Mrs. Garrett, and with a flippant attitude she says something like, "Well of course everyone loved her. She was always sweet and hardly ever yelled at the girls! I always wished I could raise my voice more, but they just wrote her so sweet."
But a year or so ago when I watched the complete series all the way through, I was thinking of this, and actually, if you pay attention to/look for it, Mrs. Garrett raises her voice and/or yells at the girls more than you (and obviously she) may remember! lol
One of my favorite instances is from "Free Spirit":
Mrs. Garrett: "Natalie, I'm getting angry...and when I get angry I yell--"
Natalie: "Then don't get angry!"
Mrs. Garrett: "IT'S TOO LATE!!"

I do like Mrs. Garret, she has charisma yet has a deadpan sense of humor.
cleverfun3000 05-02-2014, 09:48 AM I recall her yelling at Tootie for being so obsessive about going to a concert to meet with Jermaine Jackson. She was in full paremt-scolding mode in that episode. She was all "NO means "NO!!" as she practically grabbed Tootie in mid-tantrum as if she were going to try to shae some sense into her head.

Funnily enough she actually didn't raise her voice in this scene, but she was parental in handling it so quiet and composed; Tootie was the one doing all the yelling, lol:

RetroGuy2000 05-03-2014, 02:27 PM I'm not really a fan of "Starstruck". That episode was so over the top.
Yes, Mrs. Garrett yelled. I actually think she yelled quite a bit in the earlier seasons, as compared to the later years, so time may have played a part in Charlotte's recollections.

But you have to admit, when you see it as a little kid, it sure makes an impact! lol

True, especially if she hadn't watched the episodes since she filmed them, lol.
TVFactFan 05-04-2014, 08:52 PM Mrs garret was all calm and was like......." tootie your being unreasonable"

Yeah, for me the most memorable moments when I was a kid were Tootie getting hysterical in "Starstruck", Sue Ann and Cindy fighting each other in "Running", Natalie almost getting raped in "Fear Strikes Back" (I didn't know what that was, but I understood she had been attacked), the Halloween episode, and the one where Blair murders everyone (which was a creepy episode at the time).
True, especially if she hadn't watched the episodes since she filmed them, lol.
And a lot of actors and actresses don't watch their own shows.

Yeah, but that was more than just unreasonable.
