There’s nothing like watching two characters you’ve grown to love over the course of a series finally get together. You’ve wanted it to happen after years of flirtation, near-misses and frustration and they finally get there. The audience cheers. It’s beautiful for many, many episodes and then suddenly, it’s over.

With the exception of a shocking character death (hello, Game of Thrones), nothing shakes up a TV show for its audience like a much-loved relationship crumbling down before our very eyes. Its implications for the rest of a show’s main cast of characters can often be felt for seasons to come or even becomes the main talking point of a series finale.

Each of these heart-breaking breakups have been etched into the memories of audiences worldwide for one reason or another, whether it be because it’s two characters we’ve been rooting for for years or they have been torn apart by a force greater than themselves. Of course, there are way too many to cover here, so feel free to add your own in the comments!

Be aware, though, that there will be MAJOR SPOILERS to follow for shows such as How I Met Your Mother, Friends, Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones. You have been warned.

spoilers? haven't these all happened months to years ago?

10. Barney and Robyn - HIMYM (never believed them as a couple anyways, liked Ted and Robyn as a couple even less)

9. Leonard & Penny - TBBT (I already assumed that it would be on-and-off-again anyways so who cares?)

8. Carrie & Aiden - Sex & the City (just don't care)

7. Sam & Diane – Cheers (I always thought that Frasier and Diane made more sense as a couple and S&D was just a bad plot device)

6. Cristina & Burke – Grey’s Anatomy (no idea what this show is about)

5. Robb & Talisa – Game Of Thrones (i have no interest in this show)

4. The Doctor & Rose – Doctor Who (they weren't really a couple, and didn't Rose sorta end up wit a version of the Doctor in another dimension anyways?)

3. Walt & Skylar – Breaking Bad (haven't watched this show - may catch it on Netflix sometime)

2. Lily & Marshall – How I Met Your Mother (this was just a temporary plot device, did anyone really think that they wouldn't get back together?)

1. Ross & Rachel – Friends (one of the most tiresome relationships on this or any other sitcom - I really was hoping that one of Ross's dinosaurs would come to life and destroy him)
